SUMMARY:Embodied Hope Quartet
DESCRIPTION:George Colligan (piano)\n\nJon Irabagon (saxophone)\n\nMichael Janisch (bass)\n\nAndrew Bain (drums)\n\n \n\nFollowing on from their highly successful 2016 UK tour\, drummer/composer/bandleader Andrew Bain’s Embodied Hope Quartet return in April 2018 to release his debut album as a leader on Whirlwind Recordings. Taking jazz as a metaphor for positive change in the world\, and based on seven aspects – listening\, surprise\, accompaniment\, practice\, responsibility\, trust and\, ultimately\, hope – this concert will feature a suite of music defined both by its distinct flexibility of expression and the quartet’s ongoing appraisal of what it progressively achieves.\n\nFeaturing George Colligan on piano (Jack DeJohnette\, Cassandra Wilson)\, Jon Irabagon on saxophone (Dave Douglas\, Tom Harrell) and Michael Janisch on bass (Lee Konitz\, Kurt Elling).\n\n" Bain's skilled and memorable compositions on Embodied Hope are expertly executed with first rate playing and shimmering moments of sheer brilliance. " ★★★★ All About Jazz\n\n“His own [Bain's] playing is a revelation as he combines power with detail and precision in a bright\, busy\, colourful and imaginative display behind the kit.” ★★★★ The Jazz Mann\n\n"Bain is always a vital driver behind the kit\, ever engaged and urging his fellow players on. .. and as a composer brings a strong melodic sense to his tunes. SUMMARY:Vortex Late Night: Kefaya Presents - Elaha Soroor
DESCRIPTION:Elaha Soroor - vocals\n\nGiuliano Modarelli - guitar\n\nAl MacSween - keyboard/synth\n\nJoost Hendrickx - drums Gurdain Rayatt - tabla\n\n \n\nElaha Soroor is a London based singer / songwriter from Afghanistan. Her music\, deeply rooted in the Afghan folk tradition\, is a beautiful combination of traditional and modern sounds. For her forthcoming new album 'Songs Of Our Mothers'\, Elaha is collaborating with London-based musicians\, producers and founders of Kefaya\, Giuliano Modarelli and Al MacSween. Drawing on Elaha's personal experience of fleeing Afghanistan as a refugee\, the album is a deep reflection on the experience of women and female musicians in modern Afghanistan\, a scathing attack on patriarchal values and a joyous statement of liberation and resilience. All the songs of the album are based around Afghan folk songs originally composed and performed by female artists with influences spanning from jazz to dub and electronica.\n\n"One of the most intriguing new bands of the year" **** The Guardian\n\n“Ecstatic… Like light from a distant star” **** Financial Times\n\n“Powerful\, thought-provoking stuff” **** Songlines\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/yI4GHTICVdo[/embed]\n\n \n\n \n\n
