DESCRIPTION:Dave will talk about performance\, specific to brass\, but also encompassing work on other instruments. Topics like time\, tone\, practice\, air flow\, flexibility\, articulation\, and phrasing as they all interact with improvisation will be discussed. Bring your axe!\n\nCOMPOSITION MASTERCLASS INFORMATION\n\nDouglas is a prolific trumpeter\, composer\, educator and entrepreneur from New York City known for the stylistic breadth of his work and for keeping a diverse set of ensembles and projects active simultaneously.\n\nHis unique contributions to improvised music have garnered distinguished recognition\, including a Doris Duke Artist Award\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, an Aaron Copland award\, and two Grammy Award nominations. Douglas' career spans more than 50 unique original recordings as a leader and more than 500 published works. His current ensembles include: Dave Douglas Quintet; Sound Prints\, a quintet co-led with saxophonist Joe Lovano; UPLIFT\, a sextet including bassist Bill Laswell; Present Joys\, a longstanding duo with pianist Uri Caine which recently added Andrew Cyrille as third member for a 2019 recording; High Risk\, an electronic ensemble with Shigeto\, Jonathan Maron\, and Ian Chang; and the latest project\, ENGAGE\, a sextet with Jeff Parker\, Tomeka Reid\, Anna Webber\, Nick Dunston\, and Kate Gentile.\n\nAn integral part of Dave Douglas' storied career is his ongoing commitment to education. In addition to his ten years serving as artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at The Banff Centre in Canada and his recent appointment as International Jazz Artist in Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, in 2013 he launched his own Jazz Workshop\, dedicated to enriching the musical experiences of younger players.\n\nDouglas has led classes with as many as 70 students at the Banff Centre to as few as 11 students at Carnegie Hall. DESCRIPTION:Richard Jones - Violin\nChristian Miller - Guitar\nShirley Smart - Cello\n\nRooted in Parisian and American Jazz - but taking in the Chaabi music of Al-\ngeria\, Balkan folk melodies and the early modern music of Western Europe -\nBalagan combines these thread into an elegant yet fiery fusion featuring the\nintimate chamber instrumentation of violin\, guitar and cello.\n\nThe band has maintained a busy gigging schedule\, touring the UK and ap-\npearing at top London venues including the Green Note\, Elgar Room and\nNational Portrait Gallery. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2018\non F-IRE Presents\, and features guest appearances by Alice Zawadzki\, Joe\nBrowne (Last Summer’s Tealights) and Tommie Black-Roff (Teyr.)\n\nRichard Jones - Violin\n\nRichard Jones is an exciting young British violinist recognised for his innovative sound\, approach and adaptability in bringing the violin to life within a broad range of musical contexts. Born in Wales\, his musical upbringing was a diverse tapestry of experiences that ignited his passion for music and provided opportunity to explore and develop.\nSince completing his studies at Guildhall\, Richard has immersed himself in the London jazz scene and recent collaborations include projects lead by leading Jazz musicians Christine Tobin\, Mark Edwards\, Robert Mitchell and Nicolas Meier.\n\nChristian Miller - Guitar\n\nTrading astronomy for the guitar\, Christian has played and recorded with a broad cross section of London’s finest musicians including: Nigel Price\, Adrian Cox\, Mike Mondesir and Alex Garnett; US based musicians such as Gordon Webster\, Brandi Disterheft and Aurora Nealand\, and many others in\nmusic ranging from New Orleans jazz and swing through to bop\, contemporary jazz and electric fusion.\nHaving taken lessons and classes with musicians including Peter Bernstein\, Barry Harris\, Stevie Wishart and Dave Cliff\, he aims to combine a deep respect for the traditions of jazz with an open mind for future directions. His projects include string fusion group Balagan Cafe Band\, gypsy jazz band the Hot Club of Jupiter and electric jazz quartet Big Fan.\n\nShirley Smart - Cello\nShirley Smart is recognised as one of the UK's most versatile and creative cellists. She spent 10 years in Jerusalem\, where studied and performed in a wide variety of musical traditions from the North Africa\, Turkey and Middle East.\nShe has subsequently worked with many leading musicians including Avishai Cohen\, Omer Avital\, Yasmin Levy\, Antonio Forcione\, Mulatu Astatke and Neil Cowley. Her own projects include leading her own trio\, and the band Melange as well as a duo with pianist Robert Mitchell and Iraqi-folk based\ntrio Sawa.
