Under the direction of Scott Stroman\, the band seems to go from strength to strength\, attracting London’s top players and writers from Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor in the early days to the exciting current lineup featured in the band today.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Martin Speake – Saxophone\nHans Koller – Euphonium/Piano\nJeff Williams – Drums\nFred Thomas – Double Bass\n\nThelonious formed in 2015 to study and play the music of one of the 20th century’s greatest composers.\n\nSaxophonist Martin Speake\, Euphonium/Piano Hans Koller and Calum Gourlay on double bass\, spent 3 years leading up to Monk’s centennial year (2017) learning all his compositions and studying his music. It was at their monthly residency downstairs at The Vortex where they began to present their take on Monk for his second century.\n\nPlaying stripped down versions focusing on the strong sometimes beautiful sometimes angular melodies of Thelonious Monk. Joined tonight by young lion David Ingamells on drums.

DESCRIPTION:Angelica Sanchez - piano\n\nMark Sanders - Drums\n\nPaul Dunmall - sax\n\nJohn O'Gallagher - sax\n\n \n\nIn her piano playing as well as her compositions Angelica Sanchez seeks out the lyrical heartbeat within any avant-garde storm   - The New York Times\n\nSanchez's provocative writing - full of evocative harmonies and open-ended forms showcases her flair for counterpoint and marks her as a formidable talent..   - JazzTimes Magazine\n\n \n\nPianist/Composer/Educator Angelica Sanchez moved to New York from Arizona in 1994.\n\nSince moving to the East Coast Sanchez has collaborated with such notable artists as: Wadada Leo Smith\, Paul Motian\, Richard Davis\, Chad Taylor\, Chris Lightcap\, Rob Mazurek\, Tim Berne\, Mario Pavone\, Ben Monder amongst others\n\nSanchez leads numerous groups\,the most recent being her Nonet which features Chris Speed\,Michael Attais\,Thomas Heberer\,Kenny Warren\,Ben Goldberg\,John Hebert\,Omar Tamez and Sam Ospavot.\n\nHer music has been recognized in national and international publications including Jazz Times\,The New York Times\,Chicago Tribune amongst others. She was also the 2008 recipient of a French/American Chamber Music America grant and the 2011 Rockefeller Brothers Pocantico artist residency.\n\nSanchez’ debut solo CD “A Little House” was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition and her recording “Wires & Moss” featuring her Quintet was chosen as one of best Releases of 2012 in “The New York City Jazz Record (formerly AllAboutJazz-New York).”\n\nHer recording “Twine Forest” a duo with Wadada Leo Smith received Honorable Mention as one of the best releases of 2013 in "The New York City Jazz Record."\n\nHer latest trio project “Float The Edge” features Michael Formanek and Tyshawn Sorey and has garnered wide critical acclaim.\n\nSanchez also recently debuted a new piano duo with Marilyn Crispell. A recording and future concerts are currently in the planning stages.\n\nAngelica Sanchez has a Masters Degree in Arranging from William Paterson University. She is currently on faculty at The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
