SUMMARY:Vortex discussion 58 - Freedom and self-expression in music and art
DESCRIPTION:All forms of tampering with human beings\, getting at them\, shaping them against their will to your own pattern\, all thought control and conditioning are\, therefore\, a denial of that in men which makes them men and their values ultimate. (Isaiah Berlin\, Two Concepts of Liberty)\n\nHow do musicians and artists have enough freedom\, when playing with others\, to express themselves? Is this only possible where they have the chance to improvise or is it also possible in other situations?\n\nThis week’s discussion\, which is open to all\, goes into parts of this subject. Hosted by Oliver Weindling\, Vortex director. Feel free to join to listen or take part.\n\n———————-\n\nTopic: Vortex discussion 58\nTime: Jun 2\, 2021 05:30 PM London\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/4934035526\n\nMeeting ID: 493 403 5526

SUMMARY:Lucid Dreamers (1st Show - Live Stream)
DESCRIPTION:Line-up:\nBrigitte Beraha - Vocals\, Electronics\nGeorge Crowley - Tenor Saxophone\, Clarinet\, Electronics\nAlcyona Mick - Piano\, Synths\nTim Giles - Drums\, Electronics\nAbout\nThis is a live streamed event - the performance was recorded on the 21st May 2021.\n\nBrigitte Beraha’s early incarnation of ‘Lucid Dreamers’ premiered at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall as a trio with the ‘inventive’ George Crowley (Melt Yourself Down\, Yazz Ahmed) on tenor saxophone/ electronics and ‘high energy and powerful’ Tim Giles (Nostalgia 77\, Iain Ballamy) on drums/electronics in November 2019 as part of the London Jazz Festival with music written by Brigitte\, inspired by the industrial world that we live in. Now extended to a quartet with ‘world class’ Alcyona Mick (Natacha Atlas) on piano\, the quartet was due to play the Vortex in May 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Instead\, they released their debut album 'Lucid Dreamers' on Let Me Out Records in July 2020 and are now finally playing their first concert in front of an audience\, one year on\, with music featuring on the album as well as brand new material which they will be recording soon towards their second album.\n\n‘Exceptional recording.’ Peter Quinn\, Jazzwise * * * *\n‘Entrancing and very beautiful’ Alison Bentley\, LondonJazzNews\n\n‘Lucid Dreamers is forceful\, sustained aural theatre\, and it demands nothing but your dreams in action in return. Utterly stunning.’ Liverpool Sound and Vision * * * *\n\n‘Something of a new departure for her\, the small\, electronically enhanced unit offering unique challenges which pay-off surprisingly well. Her lissom vocals frequently overlaid by looping\, creating a mesmeric effect [...] with ethereal\, emotionally imbued soundscapes.’ Jazz Journal\n\n‘I’m a big fan of the vocalist Brigitte Beraha. She has a unique\, exploratory\, explosive\, fascinating voice’. Jez Nelson\, Somethin’ Else\, Jazz FM\n\n \nHow to watch online - please read\nClick BOOK NOW to get your ticket. Please note: this is a live streamed event. It will start immediately at 8pm\, and will last approximately an hour. It will not be available on-demand so if you are late to sign-in and watch the performance\, you will miss it and not be able to replay the video.
