SUMMARY:Vortex discussion 74. Soul music: music for whose soul?
DESCRIPTION:Music as "soul music" is sometimes dismissed as hackneyed and meaningless. But certainly great music has personality and emotion\, often that of the artists performing in jazz. But is there more than that. And if there is a greater depth being sought\, what sort and for whom? Just self-indulgence for the musicians or something more for the audience?\n\nJoin the online discussion\, now going for nearly 18 months\, which involves music lovers and practitioners in all forms. Open to all.\n\n \n\n-----------------------------------------------------------\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81310403773?pwd=Q21UejROVzFGa2JZKytMVkpKY1lYdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 813 1040 3773\nPasscode: 033631\n\n

SUMMARY:Andrew Woolf - 'Song Unsung' Album Launch (1st Show)
DESCRIPTION:Line-up:\nAndrew Woolf - Tenor Saxophone\nJoe Auckland - Trumpet\nRob Updegraff - Electric guitar\nDave Manington - Double Bass\nSimon Roth - Drums\nAbout\nSong Unsung is saxophonist Andrew Woolf’s first release as a bandleader and composer. Subtle African and Brazilian derived grooves sit alongside ethereal and atmospheric free abstractions\, whilst other compositions present soulful melodies which belie their odd-meter undercurrents – all drawn together by an emphasis on direct\, lyrical expression\, and heartfelt sincerity of emotion throughout.\n\nAndrew is best known for his work in contemporary jazz groups such as The Button Band and Madwort Saxophone Quartet\, as well as his explorations into choro (a style of traditional Brazilian music) with Alvorada – “one of the most exciting bands in London” (Resonance FM).\n\nIn his own ensemble\, Andrew is joined by Joe Auckland (trumpet)\, Rob Updegraff (guitar)\, Dave Manington (double bass) and Simon Roth (drums). The contrasting voices of these impressive musicians complement each other beautifully\, bringing an intimate quality to their improvisations and playful interactions.\n\n“Thoughtful\, melodic\, uplifting music” (All About Jazz)\n“Artful and lovingly rendered album” (Debbie Burke – jazz author)\n“Warm-toned\, mellifluous tenor saxophone… with elegant phrasing” (London Jazz News)\n \nINSTRUCTIONS FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS – PLEASE READ\nWelcome to the Vortex.
