DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, due to the current circumstances\, this show had to be cancelled. We apologise for the inconvenience\, all tickets will be refunded for now and we are hoping to reschedule this performance in January 2022.\n \nLine-up\nStan Sulzmann – saxophone\n\nNick Smart - trumpet\n\nRoss Stanley - Hammond organ\n\nTim Giles - drums\nThe Shape of Jazz to Come\nThe Shape of Jazz To Come is a series of performances supported by the Dave Holland – Evan Parker Fund and hosted by the Vortex Jazz Club. Its mission is in line with the Vortex’s mission of nurturing new and emerging talent although sometimes we mix old and new. For this Christmas Special we presents the sensei-s that is the teachers who have taught and nurtured generations of young jazz musicians. Part of what shapes the future of the music is the passing on of traditions from one generation to the next. This is not just a flow in one direction as the younger generations bring fresh perspectives to the music and so the the cycle continues. Sulzmann and Smart are committed to nurturing the next generations of musicians and in doing so they’ve also kept their own musical perspectives open and fresh.\nAbout\nStan Sulzmann brings together three of his closest musical friends\, each with a huge wealth of talent and experience. The quartet's latest album Shadow Painting is due for release 21 January 2022.The work is a collaboration between these four incredible musicians and result is an album of real musical beauty that is both vibrant and delicate. Sulzmann's hallmark robust yet lyrical sound is complimented by Ross Stanley’s expressive Hammond accompaniment which often shimmers and swirls underneath the surface while Tim Giles’ tasteful bustling grooves give the group real momentum.\n\nThe quartet will be playing a mixture of Stan’s original tunes and cunning re-workings of standards\, while putting a contemporary spin on the jazz tradition.\n\nStan Sulzmann\n\nLegendary British saxophonist Stan Sulzmann has been a hugely influential figure at the forefront of British Jazz for nearly 50 years. Widely regarded as one of the truly original jazz voices as both composer and improviser\, Stan Sulzmann has been at the vanguard of every significant development of the music since the 1960’s. \n\nRoss Stanley\n\nOrganist and pianist Ross Stanley is one of the most in-demand musicians in the UK playing for the cream of the UK jazz scene as well as many visiting artists.\n\nNick Smart \n\nTrumpeter Nick Smart has established himself as one of the pillars of jazz education in the UK. He currently heads the Jazz Department at The Royal Academy of Music in London and has performed with the Kenny Wheeler Big Band\, James Taylor Quartet and the Stan Sulzmann Big Band\n\nTim Giles\n\nDrummer Tim Giles needs no introduction to Sulzmann fans as he has been Stan’s drummer of choice for many years\, playing in his Big Band and Neon Quartet.\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/QCJGQSVJSXs[/embed]\n\n \nCOVID INFORMATION FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS – PLEASE READ\nWelcome to the Vortex.
