SUMMARY:Stan Sulzmann\, Will Barry\, Conor Chaplin & Jeff Williams (1st show)
DESCRIPTION:The Shape of Jazz to Come presents: Stan Sulzmann\, Will Barry\, Conor Chaplin & Jeff Williams\nTSOJTC is a series of performances supported by the Dave Holland – Evan Parker Fund and hosted by the Vortex Jazz Club. Its mission is in line with the Vortex’s mission of nurturing new and emerging talent although sometimes we mix old and new. Part of what shapes the future of the music is the passing on of traditions from one generation to the next. This is not just a flow in one direction as the younger generations bring fresh perspectives to the music and so the the cycle continues.\n\n \nLINE-UP\nStan Sulzmann – saxophone\n\nWill Barry – piano\n\nConor Chaplin – double bass\n\nJeff Williams – drums\n \n\n\nIt's been a pleasure playing with Will Barry and Conor Chaplin over the last few years. We got together during covid when we couldnt play gigs just for our own enjoyment\,  revisiting some of the music from my Jigsaw cd ( with Marc Copland\, Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier) and playing  standards as well as music from Ken Wheeler and John Taylor that I was associated with over the years.  It was great fun hearing such fine young players interpreting this music  from a fresh viewpoint but with deep respect for the history. On this gig we will be joined by Jeff Williams the wonderful US drummer residing here for some years Jeff has a long list of credentials and plays from a great well of experience. The mix of senior and young players is very healthy \, drawing on the rich history but still having the drive to go forward - Stan Sulzmann\n\n \n\nAbout\n Stan Sulzmann\nLegendary British saxophonist Stan Sulzmann has been a hugely influential figure at the forefront of British Jazz for nearly 50 years. Widely regarded as one of the truly original jazz voices as both composer and improviser\, Stan Sulzmann has been at the vanguard of every significant development of the music since the 1960’s.\n Jeff Williams \n\nIn a career that began fifty years ago in New York City\, US born drummer Jeff Williams' musical associates have included Stan Getz\, Lee Konitz\, Dave Liebman\, Joe Lovano\, John Abercrombie and many more. Since taking up a second residence in London he has released six albums as a leader for the Whirlwind label\, comprised of his original compositions\, that feature Kit Downes\, Josh Arcoleo\, Sam Lasserson\, Phi Robson\, John O'Gallagher\, John Hébert\, Duane Eubanks\, Michael Formanek and Carmen Staaf. As well as touring with his own group\, Jeff has performed in the UK with Martin Speake\, Nikki Iles\, Norma Winstone\, Xhosa Cole\, and a host of others.\n\n Connor Chaplin\n\nBorn in the south west of Ireland and then growing up mostly in Surrey\, Conor Chaplin studied at Trinity College of Music\, in Greenwich under the tutelage of Simon Purcell\, Steve Watts\, and others. He is best known currently as part of Mercury Prize nominated group Dinosaur\, led by trumpeter-composer Laura Jurd\, as well as other contemporary original jazz projects including Flying Machines and formerly WorldService Project. Between these regular projects and other one-off occasions he has had the pleasure of touring extensively throughout the UK\, North America\, Europe and Asia and has been fortunate to perform with diverse artists including Kit Downes\, Ari Hoenig\, Ben Van Gelder\, Reinier Baas\, Marius Neset\, Thomas Strønen\, Bobo Stenson\, Harold Mabern\, George Garzone\, Jacob Collier\, Jesse Van Ruller\, Iain Ballamy\, Tony Tixier\, Keyon Harrold\, Stan Sulzmann\, Bobby Wellins and others.\n\n\nWill Barry\n Will Barry is a pianist\, drummer and percussionist from London who graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016. He is part of numerous projects internationally\, most prominently touring with Phronesis bassist Jasper Høiby’s group ‘Fellow Creatures’ in Turkey\, Belgium\, Germany\, Switzerland\, Austria\, Denmark\, Holland and also extensively in the UK.  In the last few years Will has performed at the North Sea\, Love Supreme\, Green Hours and Umbria Jazz Festivals.\n\n\n \nCOVID INFORMATION FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS – PLEASE READ\nWelcome to the Vortex. Although the government has relaxed its Covid restrictions the Vortex continues to operate measures to protect users of the premises.\nPlease note the following:\n\n \tWe ask you not to attend gigs if you have or think you may have any Covid-19 symptoms.\n \tWe also ask audience members to do a lateral flow test on the day of the gig and only attend if it's negative. If you can’t make a gig because you have to self-isolate then just get in touch by filling out this form and we’ll issue a refund.\n \tIf you would like to sit by friends who have bought separate tickets\, please email the club with details and we will make every effort to accommodate.\n \tWe are cashless. We only accept cards for purchases at the bar (except American Express).\n \tWe ask that everyone wears a mask when moving around inside the building.\n \tAutomatic hand sanitiser stations are provided at various places within the building.\n \tFull details of the measures that we are taking to prevent transmission of Covid are set out in our risk assessment and management plan which can be found on our website.\n\n
