DESCRIPTION:The Shape of Jazz to Come presents: Immy Churchill\, Anatole Muster\, Scottie Thompson\, Matthew Berrill\nTSOJTC is a series of performances supported by the Dave Holland – Evan Parker Fund and hosted by the Vortex Jazz Club.\nTales From The Undertow\nInspired by the folk tradition of storytelling through music\, Tales From The Undertow is an exciting new project involving Anatole Muster (accordion)\, singer Immy Churchill (vocals)\, pianist Scottie Thompson (piano) and Matthew Berrill (clarinet). United in their love of classic songwriters and traditional folk music\, they present a fresh and inspired take on the repertoire of musicians such as Joni Mitchell\, Fred Hersch\, Pat Metheny and James Taylor. Original compositions reflecting these styles will also be featured\, framed by this novel combination of instruments. Their unique sound and approach sets them apart; creating an intimate evening that celebrates the power of storytelling through improvisation and lyrics. \n\nLINE-UP\nImmy Churchill \nImmy Churchill is a jazz singer and singer songwriter studying at The Royal Academy of Music. She has performed with a range of ensembles and as a soloist at venues such as ‘The Green Note’\, ‘The Royal Festival Hall’\, ‘Pizza Express Live’\, ‘Ronnie Scott’s' ‘The King’s Place’ ‘The 606’ and ‘Piano Smithfield’. She looks to embrace not only the lyrical quality of being a singer but also the joys of singing wordlessly and improvising. As a member of The London Vocal Project\, Immy has played with the likes of Norma Winstone and Dave Holland and has recently been involved in Jon Hendricks’ Miles Ahead. Constantly inspired by a wide range of musicians from Joni Mitchell and James Taylor to Ella Fitzgerald and Norma Winstone\, Immy has a wide breadth of musical knowledge that sets her apart as a vocalist. \nScottie Thompson\nScottie Thompson is a pianist and composer from Portsmouth. He has performed music in a wide range of styles with an exciting array of musicians at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and Buckingham Palace. He has also won various composition awards\, some of his arrangements having been played on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM in recent years.\nScottie is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London; here he has been honing his skills in performance\, composition and production\, and has had the opportunity to play with like-minded musicians.\nMatthew Berrill\nMatthew Berrill is a sought after Irish session musician and is a member of many ensembles in the jazz\, improvised and traditional Irish worlds. These include Ensemble Ériu\, Cuar\, and the Irish Memory Orchestra. In 2019 and 2020 he worked with many acclaimed Irish artists including Mick Flannery\, John Blek\, Pauline Scanlon\, Inni-K and The Whileaways. He curates the Galway Music Residency’s ‘3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music’ series and was a director of the Galway Jazz Festival until 2019\, having been involved since 2010. In partnership with the GMR\, he instigated the ‘Jazz Tempo’ project and is a recipient of the ‘Agility Award’ from the Arts Council to research and compose for this in 2022. Matthew also received an Arts Council Bursary in 2020 and 2021 to compose and perform music for a trio and a sextet and and in September 2020 he started a Masters at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music\, London with a scholarship offered by the Academy.\nAnatole Muster \nAt barely 20 years of age\, the Swiss producer and accordionist has already gained critical praise from both musicians and fans alike. His unique approach to modern Jazz got featured by Jamie Cullum on his BBC 2 radio show and made him collaborate with genre-bending heavyweights just as Kiefer\, Shaun Martin\, Hadrien Feraud or Tennyson.\n[embed]https://youtu.be/THhcrK0Lyig[/embed]\n
