Freedom for the performer\, freeness in terms of ‘point of sale’\, free jazz in terms of lack of constraint.\n\nThe word ‘free’ became a style (or attitude) after it was used by Ornette Coleman for his 1961 album. And then became almost more codified.\n\nWhat freedom did it give the artist? A chance to move forward\, or an opening of the mind. So did this attitude even help in giving a strength in more authoritarian regimes such as Eastern Europe.
