SUMMARY:Matt Anderson Quartet 'The Town and the City' Album Launch + support from The Magic Lantern (solo)
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM\n \nLine-up:\nMatt Anderson - Tenor / Soprano Saxophone\n\nAlberto Palau - Piano\n\nWill Harris - Double Bass\n\nJay Davis - Drums\n\n+ Jamie Doe (The Magic Lantern) - Voice & Guitar\n \nAbout\nLondon-based saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson presents his third album\, The Town and the City\, which follows 2018’s Rambling also by this long-running quartet. The title refers in part to the diverse influences on the music\, such as from the whole spectrum of the jazz tradition and various rhythmic traditions from around the world\, but also more pastoral\, spacious and folk-influenced sounds. This reflects Matt’s upbringing in the rural North Yorkshire Moors juxtaposed with his love of jazz and experience of living in the urban melting pot of London\, which is also where this band was formed.\n\nThe son of a music teacher and based in Leeds for a time\, Matt moved to London in 2015 to study for an MA at the Royal Academy of Music where he now coaches Junior Jazz ensembles. Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital\, he has since performed with artists/bands such as the Gareth Lockrane and Calum Gourlay big bands\, Jamie Doe\, Hannes Riepler and Ivo Neame. In Leeds\, he worked with many of the city’s top musicians/composers including Jamie Taylor\, Jamil Sheriff\, James Hamilton and Jiannis Pavlidis (in collaboration with Greg Hutchinson)\, and he has also toured in New Zealand\, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.\n\nAlberto Palau is an immensely talented pianist from Valencia\, Spain. Now based in London\, his experiences living in Boston and New York and working with artists such as Perico Sambeat\, Sam Yahel and Charles McPherson make him much in-demand from leading British musicians. Jay Davis is one of the busiest drummers on the London scene\, featuring for example in the Alex Hitchcock Quintet\, Big Bad Wolf and his own group BadTrad. Will Harris’ remarkable bass playing has put him in high demand in the South-West where he has been based for many years\, and after spending time in London he has become an increasingly popular choice of bassist in the capital as well.\n\nWorking together frequently over the past seven years\, the band have developed a deep connection\, touring extensively in the U.K. as well as appearing at the Bimhuis\, Amsterdam; Jamboree\, Barcelona and Jimmy Glass\, Valencia.\n\n+ support from The Magic Lantern (solo)\n\nThe Magic Lantern is the musical moniker of singer-songwriter and composer Jamie Doe\, an artist blurring the boundaries between folk\, jazz and contemporary music. Born in Australia before moving to the UK at 12\, his songs examine the limitless depth of human experience with devastating\, joyous results.\n\nHis fourth album 'A Reckoning Bell' was written and recorded while helping to care for his father with Alzheimers disease\, sees Jamie turn to the piano to explore what loss can teach us about love and how love’s many small acts give a life meaning. The result is a study in masculine vulnerability that sits with and acknowledges the inevitability of a loss witnessed in slow motion and the unexpected moments of joy that sustain us.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/vM4fawOZzi8[/embed]
