SUMMARY:Vortex discussion 121 - How important is nationality?
DESCRIPTION:How tolerant should we be to\, say\, Russian musicians who want to play. It’s certainly the case that in Poland Russians\, irrespective of their beliefs and the quality of their playing\, are no longer welcome to play. But is this a correct thing to do? Similarly\, there are ongoing discussions about Israeli musicians.\n\nJoin our weekly online discussion which has been running since March 2020\, and is led by Vortex director Oliver Weindling.\n\nOpen to all.\n\n——————————-\n\nTopic: Vortex discussion 121\nTime: Nov 8\, 2022 04:30 PM London\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88536272248?pwd=cEFIYWt2SkpaL3RUNjBYQjE4em1KUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 885 3627 2248\nPasscode: 928537

SUMMARY:The Music of Miles
DESCRIPTION:An evening of music celebrating the first great Miles Davis quintet\, focussing on their Prestige recordings\nMiles Davis is one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz with a career spanning decades. This evening we focus on one six month period in 1956\, featuring what would become known as the 'First Great Quintet'.\n\nMiles took the band into Rudy Van Gelder's studio to record four albums as quickly as possible\, trying to fulfil obligations from a recording contract signed while still addicted to heroin. The band approached the sessions as if they were playing a nightclub set\, and the results remain some of the most influential small group hard bop recordings.\n\nWe play a selection of tunes from these dates\, that surfaced on the now classic albums Cookin'\, Workin' \, Relaxin' and Steamin'.\n\nFollowing on from the band's previous sell out shows at the Vortex featuring all Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk repertoire \, we return to present a celebration of another of the all time jazz greats. Expect some well known favourites and a few less commonly played tunes as we spend an evening with one of the iconic composers of the 20th century.\n\nDavid Miller - Saxophone\nEric Lounsbury - Trumpet\nMichael Richardson - Piano\nDuncan McKenzie - Bass\nBobby James - Drums\n\n
