SUMMARY:Vortex discussion 134: Free improvisation-innovative or a cul-de-sac?
DESCRIPTION:Free improvisation dates back to Ornette Coleman and Joe Harriett at the end of the 50s. After 70 years\, is it innovative or just a cul-de-sac which only will ever appeal to limited audiences? Though perhaps it’s where the music can open to other art forms.\n\nIt is again playing an increasing role in the Vortex programme. Time to ditch it?\n\nJoin our weekly discussion\, now celebrating its 3rd anniversary. Led by Oliver Weindling\, Vortex director\, it’s open to all.\n\n————————————-\n\nTopic: Free improvisation discussion\nTime: Mar 28\, 2023 04:30 PM London\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83847849236?pwd=TzN2RW4wU0s1aDhsOTN3d2tiN1pBUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 838 4784 9236\nPasscode: 777846

SUMMARY:The Music of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
DESCRIPTION:An evening of music celebrating the music of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.\n\n\n\nThe unmistakable sound of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers served as the quintessential hard bop group for nearly fifty years\, and remains just as vibrant today. The band's signature sound combined the technical and compositional elements of 1940s bebop while bringing back to the forefront a strong blues influence that had been so important to the early development of jazz.\n\nFollowing on from the band's previous sell out shows at the Vortex featuring Miles Davis\, Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk repertoire\, we return to present a celebration of another of the all time jazz greats. Expect some well known favourites and a few less commonly played tunes as we spend an evening with one of the iconic figures of 20th century jazz.\n\nDavid Miller - Saxophone\n\nEric Lounsbury - Trumpet\n\nMichael Richardson - Piano\n\nDuncan McKenzie - Bass\n\nBobby James - Drums\n\n\n
