SUMMARY:Vortex discussion 154 - Do we need non-UK musicians for a thriving scene?
DESCRIPTION:For around 40 years\, till 1979\, there were imposed limits on the number of non-UK musicians who could play here. (Particularly affecting the jazz scene from USA.) Are we going through the same again now with\, due to costs and foreign entertainer complexities\, again?\n\nToday’s discussion aims to look both backwards and forwards. What it means for what we hear and who we interact with. With a thriving education scene\, maybe we don’t need them so much!\n\nHosted by Vortex director Oliver Weindling online\, it’s open to all!\n\n————————-\n\nTopic: Vortex discussion - do we need foreigners?\nTime: May 9\, 2023 04:30 PM London\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89653385008?pwd=NlRKWUQ4cks2K3Ara3c5V3BCOC9EUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 896 5338 5008\nPasscode: 674361\n\n

SUMMARY:Simeon May Trio + The Naomi Gee Wright Band [double bill]
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45pm\, music 8.30pm\n \nABOUT\n\n\n\n\nSimeon May Trio\n\nSimeon May - Tenor Saxophone and Bass Clarinet\n\nKinzan - Double Bass and Electric Bass\n\nTheo Guttenplan -  Drums\n\n\nThe group\, three years young\, was born out of a love for the great trio records of Rollins\, Ornette\, Paul Bley\, Paul Motian\, Joe Henderson and Joe Lovano. These sounds collide with traditions of European jazz\, folk and improvised musics in the trio’s original compositions\, making for a sound that feels both deeply rooted and distinct in character. With a strong sense of freedom and interplay\, the group explore and abstract their song-like forms and celebrate the breadth and openness of the trio setting.\n\n\n\n+\n\nThe Naomi Gee Wright Band  \n\n\n\n\nNaomi Gee Wright - Cello / Composition\n\nBrigitte Beraha - Voice\n\nBen Hazleton - Tabla\n\n\n\n\nAfter being inspired to write her 'Trust' Suite for solo cello for the Anima Rising CD\, Naomi expanded the music to include tabla and voice and the Naomi Gee Wright Band was born.\nThe music\, performed with her bandmates\, vocalist Brigitte Beraha and Ben Hazleton on tabla is finely balanced between composition and improvisation.\nWith core influences of Indian music\, (Naomi has visited many times)\, and Celtic folk string music\, other inspirations for Naomi include Ry Cooder\, Egberto Gismonti\, Joni Mitchell\, Frida Kahlo\, and Benjamin Britten.\n\n "There's inspired accompaniment from flute\, violin and particularly Naomi Wright's cello."  The Guardian
