DESCRIPTION: \nDoors 6:30 PM\, Music 7:30 PM - 1 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nSteve Saunders - Guitar\n\nAsger Nissen - Alto Saxophone\n\nKai Chareunsy - Drums\n\n \nAbout\nUK guitarist Steve Saunders (Xhosa Cole\, Paul Dunmall) and Berlin saxophonist Asger Nissen (Jim Black\, Jeff Ballard\, Loren Stillman) present ‘arche’ (ar-kay)\, a unique\, bassless trio infused with contemporary classical and jazz/improvised music influences. ‘Arche’ have performed throughout the UK and Europe at venues ranging from the prestigious Birmingham Symphony Hall Stage with legendary New York jazz drummer Jeff Williams to Donau115 in Berlin\, where Asger and Steve worked with rising German drummer Marius Wankel. The group perform original compositions collaboratively composed by Asger and Steve\, exploring contemporary music techniques within an open\, improvisatory framework. The result is an original\, unified language in which compositions and improvisations blend seamlessly together\, demonstrating diverse influences from classical figures such as Pierre Boulez\, Elliott Carter and serialists Morton Feldman and Milton Babbitt\, all whilst drawing upon the depth of the jazz and improvised music tradition.\n\nFor this concert\, they will be performing with Birmingham-based drummer and composer Kai Chareunsy.\n\nAn open instrumentation set forth by the great Paul Motian\, 'arche' provides a contrasting and contemporary take on this unique ensemble configuration whilst keeping in tradition with its legacy.\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/aQHcDdIvkHw?si=5H_POkzbYugfkiWd[/embed]\n\n

They elevate the dense interplay to the highest common level\, where every moment is permeated with intense interaction. In doing so\, they unite the great compositional forms with the spontaneous moment. Together they always find the right balance between the fully developed sound space and the playful moment. Their interplay is characterized by a harmonious symbiosis that allows them to inspire and inspire each other. In the process\, a captivating dynamic unfolds\, captivating the listener and taking them on an unforgettable journey.\n\nJames Maddren is known for his lyrical and expressive virtuoso style. Together with Phil Donkin they are not only rhythm section but part of a powerful dialogue.\n\nBastian Stein's compositional work and playing are equally characterized by a strong narrative force that provides the ideal framework for virtuosic flights of fancy. His warm and effortless sound\, as well as his technical flexibility and expressive playing\, blend perfectly with the brilliant playing of Donkin and Maddren.\n\nJulius Gawlik adds another multi-faceted nuance to the trio\, harmoniously complementing the passionate and impulsive nature of his colleagues. In 2014\, Gawlik was awarded a scholarship from Temple University in Philadelphia as an outstanding soloist; in 2019\, he received the JIB Jazz Prize from the Karl Hofer Gesellschaft Berlin. Since August 2021\, Gawlik has been a permanent member of the NDR Big Band as tenor saxophonist.\n\n
