DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:30 PM\, Music 7:30 PM - 1 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nVicente Magalhães - Piano\n\nMark Fincham - Double Bass\n\nJames Law - Drums\n\n \nAbout\nThis exciting three-piece band plays music with a mixed DNA\, on one end exploring and developing on the work of its European contemporaries and on the other honouring the American tradition\, with an equal mix of modern takes on standards and original compositions. It is led by Portuguese-born\, London-based pianist\, composer\, and arranger Vicente Magalhães and features some of London's best young jazz talent.\n\nVicente moved to the UK to study music in 2013 and for eight years was highly active in the northern jazz scene\, regularly playing at clubs and on the festival circuits before moving to London in 2021 to study jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has worked with some of the biggest names in UK jazz\, including Norma Winstone\, Dave Green\, Henry Lowther\, and Julian Argüelles\, as well as outside of jazz with bands such as Embrace and the Kaiser Chiefs.\n\nExpect passionate original music\, creative arrangements\, incredible playing\, and the spirit of both Bud Powell and Kenny Wheeler celebrated in each note\n\n \n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl-cd4CYypU[/embed]

DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nTom Cawley - Piano / Electronics\n\n \nAbout\nMulti-award winning pianist and composer Tom Cawley brings his new project to the Vortex for an intimate and absorbing night of improvisation and sonic adventure.\n\nThe music is based around the interaction between the piano and an 8-track live sampling/sound manipulation device. Everything is played live and all sounds start with the piano\, but whole worlds of rhythmic\, sonic and harmonic invention are possible\, in many unpredictable and magical ways.\n\nSome of the pieces are composed\, some are purely improvised\, where Tom has programmed the device to play phrases back at him and to transform textures and sounds. Soundscapes range from plaintive and echo-drenched to industrial-sounding mayhem; dense fugal pieces are built from small cells of melody; entire pulsing rhythmical episodes are made from one (changing) note from the piano.\n\nTo further enhance this\, Tom will be using a video synthesiser\, which takes the sound and makes all sorts of patterns\, ever-evolving and multi-stylistic.\n\nThis is by far the most ambitious project that Tom has embarked on\, and tonight sees its full-length debut.
