SUMMARY:Asha Parkinson's Kalpadruma Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:30 PM\, Music 7:15 PM - 1 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nAsha Parkinson - Alto Saxophone\n\nAlex Taylor - Drums\n\nReuben Goldmark - Piano\n\nHamish Nockles-Moore - Double Bass\n\n \nAbout\nDynamic saxophonist\, composer and arranger\, Asha Parkinson releases her much anticipated second album Possession with Ubuntu Records this coming September. Jazzwise described her work as ‘genre-busting’; her music blurs boundaries between traditions to create a unique\, deeply authentic sound. Described as “a phenomenal talent” (Jazz South)\, Asha led her own band professionally from the age of 12. Enormously versatile\, she is equally convincing playing jazz\, blues and soul\, the experimental music of John Zorn\, performing her own saxophone concerto with classical orchestra or improvising with middle eastern\, Indian or flamenco musicians. She leads her Kalpadruma band\, and other ensembles at venues across the UK and beyond.\n\nAsha founded Kalpadruma in 2017 to explore exciting meeting points between Jazz\, Contemporary Classical\, Flamenco\, Mediterranean\, Arab and Indian musics. The full 14-piece mini studio orchestra featured in their Ronnie Scott's main show in November 2022. Smaller flexible formats from sextet\, quintet\, quartet and trio and even qanun and saxophone duo have featured under the Kalpadruma banner at venues from The Vortex\, Union Chapel\, Crazy Coqs\, Iklecktic to Jazz Seven Leeds and the EFG London Jazz Festival.\n\nThis quartet line-up allows Asha's compositions to be explored in a more open-ended\, intimate way\, profiling the individual voices within the band.\n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xHsViorTCI[/embed]\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ji1J-5bO9g&t=1s[/embed]\n\n \n\n[embed]https://open.spotify.com/track/1YfHeqbfeAETslWJC3pEiJ?si=13e72a1c169a44e6[/embed]

SUMMARY:John Williamson - The Northern Sea album launch
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nJohn Williamson - Double Bass\n\nAlex Hitchcock - Tenor Saxophone\n\nJonny Mansfield - Vibraphone\n\nJay Davis - Drums\n\nImmy Churchill - Voice\n\nAlex Wilson - Piano\n\n \nAbout\nBassist John Williamson presents an all-star six-piece lineup to launch The Northern Sea\, his first album as composer/bandleader\, produced by Nikki Iles and set for release in July 2024. Advance copies of the album will be available to buy at the gig.\n\nInformed by a wide-ranging musical journey and a ruthlessly focused melodic instinct\, John’s writing draws on influences such as Konitz\, Haden\, Monk and Bley. The project combines angular post-bop\, contemporary jazz\, folk and chamber music\, brought to life by a band including some of the UK’s finest improvisers.\n\nRaised in Saltburn-by-the-sea in northeast England\, John has spent time in Leeds\, Washington DC and now London\, where he has performed with musicians including Helena Kay\, Dominic Ingham\, Nigel Price\, Jo Harrop\, Paul Edis\, Vasilis Xenopoulos\, Matt Anderson\, Sam Braysher\, and many more. He was 2023 recipient of the Royal Academy of Music’s Scott Philbrick Prize for outstanding postgraduate recital.\n\n“Razor sharp reactions to a constantly-shifting musical landscape… promised much and delivered in spades” — Bebop Spoken Here\n\nPhoto credit:Tom Sankey\n\n \n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/jROIgGBc1f4?si=CvDOJV7UKxanW-h7[/embed]\n\n
