SUMMARY:Whirlpool - Series 2 Episode 2
DESCRIPTION:A new series of monthly Whirlpool concerts continues at the Vortex\, with a new cohort of musicians. They are all recent graduates of the main London music conservatoires and have been selected for their imaginative and creative approaches.\n\nThe seven curators are: Ashley Bonfante (saxophones)\, Jonah Evans (drums)\, Jacob Gryn (bass)\, Tom O’Brien (piano\, keyboards)\, Rik van der Made (saxophone)\, Jemima Whyte (saxophone)\, Julian Woods (guitar\, bass).\n\nThe second concert will be based on new pieces curated by each of the musicians. A introduction for audiences to the musicians and to get a flavour of some of the likely directions that the series might evolve over coming months\, where each concert will be curated by one or two of the musicians.\n\nThe first series of Whirlpool attracted a great group of musicians\, such as Kasper Rietkerk\, Caius Williams and Rebekah Edlund\, and increasing interest from press and others alike. This group adds to that.\n\nIt was created in 2023\, in order to help musicians embark on their musical careers\, as it helps fill the gap for them in which they find themselves immediately after they graduate.  It is named after the album of pianist John Taylor\, who was a regular at the Vortex for many years\, and indeed was the first person to use our current piano! The scheme consists of a monthly series of gigs\, where each of the curators gets to perform original music\, and looks to make contacts with musicians who had been on other jazz courses.\n\nRik will not be at the next gig.\n\nThey’re looked after by Sam Eastmond and Marta Gornitzka.\n\nWriting about last year’s opener\, Sebastian Scotney of UK Jazz News wrote:\n\n“The first night of the new ‘Whirlpool Series’ showed above all the levels of collective and collaborative musicianship and ‘instant composing’ being reached by four of the graduates who have just emerged from the London conservatoires. Their ability to co-operate and dovetail with each other to create something new – particularly considering the four had never met before – and the way they were able to create flow and to tell a story together was nothing short of astonishing.”\n\nThe next one will\, we are certain\, be equally imaginative.\n\nThe gig will be taking place downstairs\, starting at 7.00 p.m. extending over one long set. This is in such a way that the audience is able to hear Whirlpool before going to the show upstairs. Special price £5 for those going upstairs afterwards!\n\n \n\nClick to view video:\n\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1IQ2Vso_ZVbhIfMSBtaDXH3LnLTwfx7Rq/view?usp=drivesd\n\n

SUMMARY:Mike Chillingworth Quartet - Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nMike Chillingworth - Alto Saxophone\n\nIvo Neame - Piano\n\nTom Farmer - Double Bass\n\nJon Scott - Drums\n\n \nAbout\nWhile trapped for several days on a bus with fifty children Mike decided to escape his reality the only way he knew how – by immersing himself in a mathematically torturous rhythmic prison of his own design. Over the following months he attempted to make sense of the relentless polyrhythmic ear-worms which had by now burrowed deep in to his grey matter. An accord was reached\, call it Stockholm syndrome if you like\, so get ready as he prepares to present the fruits of his tortured psyche\, with the help of some of his favourite musicians/inmates\, and celebrate the release of their new album Friday the Thirteenth on Ubuntu Music.\n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agb5okHq2P8[/embed]\n\n
