SUMMARY:Whirlpool presents Julian Woods
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:30 PM\, Music 7:00 PM\n \n\nFor his Whirlpool series concert\, multi-instrumentalist and composer/arranger Julian Woods presents Sensations of Tone\, a set of brand new original compositions and arrangements which explore different ways in which music can relate to the physical processes of sound production.\n\nInspired by composers John Cage\, Harry Partch\, and John Zorn\, and by physicist Hermann von Helmholtz\, the music makes use of just intonation (‘pure tuning’) and more gestural approaches to pitch\, as well as employing ambient sound and ‘noise’.\nAs well as original compositions\, the group will present new arrangements of music from Maddie Ashman’s widely celebrated solo guitar/voice work ‘otherworld’\, which was a bestseller on Bandcamp.\n\n \nLine-up:\nJulian Woods - fretless bass\, microtonal guitar\, tin cans\n\nAmalia Young - violin\n\nMaddie Ashman - cello\, microtonal guitar\n\nTom O’Brien - samples\, FM radio\, piano\n\nJonah Evans - drums\, tin cans\, percussion

DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nCaroline Kraabel - Alto Saxophone\, Voice\n\nBex Burch - Xylophone\n\nSaadet Türköz - Voice\n\nOlga Ksendzovska - Piano\, Trombone and Voice\n\nMark Sanders - Drums\n\n \nAbout\nAn extraordinary quintet of creative improvisers whose influences and experience span the globe.\n\n"The audients' focus is so important. Their attention\, their breath\, is a gift that allows the improvisation to expand and live. There is reciprocity\, equality\, between hearers of sound who are playing and non-playing hearers\, who complete the improvisation by lending it their attention and perceiving it as a whole: where\, who\, why\, how\, what next\, the definitions of space and relationships."
