SUMMARY:Matt Cook Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:45 PM\, Music 7:30 PM - 1 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nMatt Cook - Tenor saxophone\nKarim Saber - Guitar\nWill Barry - Piano\nJohn Jones - Double bass\nKai MacRae - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout\nMatt Cook is an award-winning tenor saxophonist from London that has been described in JazzJournal Magazine as ‘Spectacular’ as well as likened to maestro saxophonists such as Wayne Shorter (London Jazz News 2020) and Mark Turner (Marlbank 2024).\n\nHe established his quintet whilst at The Royal Academy of Music combining some of the most creative and in-demand young musicians on the London Jazz Scene.\n\nMatt’s eclectic compositional influences range from modern jazz contemporaries such as Immanuel Wilkins and Ambrose Akinmusire\, to older pioneers such as John Coltrane and Joe Henderson. He is not afraid to bypass genre\, with flavours from 20th Century classical composers like Messiaen and Ravel and even nods to alternative rock bands such as Radiohead. Repetition is a key part of Matt’s compositions\, a technique he draws from spiritual jazz\, creating meditative and transcendent moments.\n\nExpect memorable melodies\, expansive improvisations and deeply moving harmonic progressions.\n\n'A Boundary Pushing Saxophonist’ - Camden New Journal\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmBNuSYFdSA[/embed]

SUMMARY:Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nEvie Hill - Voice\nCat Eden - Trombone\nJemima Whyte - Saxophone\nMatthew Hill - Trumpet\nJoe Orme - Bass\nCalum Harrison - Electric guitar\nDiarra Walcott-Ivanhoe - Piano\nLewis Kentaro Isaacs - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout\nOrchard return to the Vortex Jazz Club to release their new single\, and celebrate the exciting musical journey that their next EP will bring.\n\nOrchard are the newest eight-piece neo-soul group to emerge from the London jazz scene. Having met at Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, they have been shaped by their shared love of the jazz tradition\, and yet bring their most valuable contributions to the music through individual influences and unique musical backgrounds. Celebrating the interaction between individuality and collective experience is what Orchard’s music is all about - like rows of trees in the orchard\, each individual voice grows in conversation with the whole.\n\nHeavily influenced by artists such as Roy Hargrove\, Robert Glasper and Kokoroko\, Orchard’s music synthesises meaningful songwriting with heavy grooves\, warm horn lines\, and blistering improvisation. Having met on the Artist Masters course\, Orchard’s sound is fully grown - they released their debut EP 'Where We're Calling From' in April 2025\, gaining traction on Spotify's Jazz UK playlist\, Soweto Kinch's 'Round Midnight\, and with YolanDa Brown on Jazz FM.\n\nWith performances at EFG London Jazz Festival\, Pizza Express Soho\, and Love Supreme Jazz Festival behind them\, the band will be touring their second EP in 2026.\n\n‘[...] you are in one of the most happening venues\, about to see what I consider - and I’ve done my research - one of the most happening bands in this country\, bar none (and I know a few)’ - Gordon Wedderbern\, One Jazz\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn7-Z031ANM[/embed]
