SUMMARY:Matt Anderson with Liam Noble and Tom Herbert
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nMatt Anderson - Tenor saxophone\nLiam Noble - Piano\nTom Herbert - Double Bass\n\n*Due to unforeseen circumstances\, Tom Herbert will be stepping in for Oren Marshall in the line-up*\nAbout\nThis new project takes as its starting point the music of Thelonious Monk\, Bill Frisell and Paul Motian\, exploring the intersection of these artists’ idiosyncratic styles and their take on American musical forms like jazz\, blues and country/folk\, and featuring three of London’s most engaging improvisers in the unusual combination of tenor saxophone\, piano and tuba.\n\nBorn in the North Yorkshire Moors\, the son of a music teacher\, saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson has lived in London since 2015. His fourth album Live at Leeds Jazz Festival was released in 2024 on his own Hidden Threads Records label\, with Jazzwise awarding four stars and commenting\, “Unlike some of his contemporaries\, Anderson is very comfortable mining the rich seam of jazz that was developed in the UK through the 1970’s and 80’s by artists like Bobby Wellins\, rooted in the language of swinging post-bop but with a distinctive British accent.” He has also performed with artists/bands such as Gregory Hutchinson\, the Gareth Lockrane Big Band\, The Magic Lantern and Ivo Neame.\n\nBorn in London\, Tom studied Jazz and Classical double bass at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has been a mainstay of London's diverse and exciting music scene for many years\, most notably in Mercury Music Prize nomaited bands The Invisible and Polar Bear. He co-leads the Okumu Herbert Skinner Trio and regularly collaborates with many of London's notable players including Shabaka Hutching\, Mark Lockheart\, Dave Okumu\, James Allsopp\, John Parricelli\, Robert Stillman\, Seb Rochford\, and Chelsea Carmichael. He also performs solo improvised double bass concerts under his own name and in 2023 released the album Nightports with Tom Herbert.\n\nAfter studying music at Oxford University and the postgraduate course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama\, Liam became the regular pianist with Stan Sulzmann on John Taylor’s recommendation. He went on to work in the bands of Anita Wardell\, Harry Beckett\, Tim Whitehead and John Stevens as well as recording and touring with cult minimalist composer Moondog. During this period\, he also performed with John Taylor (as part of Stan Sulzmann’s two piano quintets)\, Kenny Wheeler and Lol Coxhill\, and in the two decades since has been a key figure on the British jazz scene.\n\n \n\n[embed] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yy7r6zU1PA[/embed]
