Its identity expands beyond instruments or people or rooms or notations—it is something or perhaps everything between these. Navigating electronics and multi-instrumentalism alike\, the ensemble plays unprescribed + composed improvised music which is both experimental + accessible. Every gig involves a mallet percussion instrument\, personnel are invited by Gloria\, and most compositions\, when there are any\, are also hers. G M?R frequently morphs by incorporating additional guest performers\, hence the plus sign.\n\nGloria Yehilevsky is a London-based composer and improviser who integrates percussion performance with ongoing multimodal enquiry into a fluid cluster of activity. She is currently a PhD candidate in composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. Situated in the UK’s jazz\, experimental\, and contemporary scenes\, recent appearances include Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival\, Sō Laboratories (NYC)\, and the Southbank Centre in Serious’ EFG London Jazz Festival.\n\nShe won the PAS/Armand Zildjian award and Italy PAS Vibraphone competition\, performed in the San Diego Symphony\, World Percussion Group\, and alongside the Bang on a Can All-Stars at MASS MoCA\, where Steve Reich described her as ‘an extremely impressive percussionist… with an amazing combination of technical mastery and riveting energy.’\n\nHer compositions are collaborative\, transdisciplinary\, and transform traditional artistic hierarchies. She is a polyglot\, child of Soviet Ukrainian immigrants\, and has experienced suffering\, bliss\, and all the colours in between.\n\nSam Warner is a London-based Trumpet/Flugelhorn player who has become a mainstream figure on the UK Jazz scene playing for the likes of Ariwo\, Valia Calda\, Riot Jazz\, Dime\, Alfa Mist and Nubyian Twist.\n\nHaving decided to pursue a career in music after winning the music for youth competition in the jazz category as a teenager\, he went on to study at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He now performs regularly at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s as well as touring extensively around the UK and abroad. On the commercial side he has played or recorded for the likes of Hak Baker\, Kojey Radical\, Tom Misch\, Loyle Carner\, Bel Cobain\, Peter Andre\, Plan B and Katy B.\n\nRichard Foote is a trombonist and composer.\n\nAs a composer and band leader Richard leads the nine-piece brass band Young Pilgrims who have performed throughout the UK and Europe with their most recent album ‘We’re Young Pilgrims’ (Stoney Lane Records) receiving international acclaim and reviews from publications such as Downbeat magazine.\n\nRichard is also a member of Riot Jazz Brass Band and enjoys a varied career as a busy freelance musician. SUMMARY:Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nFergus Quill - Double bass\nTheo Goss - Drums\nBess Shooter - Alto Saxophone\nHarvey Parkin-Christie - Tenor Saxophone\nHamish Dixon - Electronics\nAlan Wilkinson (special guest) - Alto Saxophone\n\n \nAbout:\nFergus Quill is one of the hottest acts in the British jazz scene and is the winner of the 2023 Peter Whittingham Jazz Award\, the 2022 Tina May Jazz Award\, and nominee of the 2025 Jazz FM Innovation Award. Tonight\, he will be playing tribute to the Leeds alt-jazz pioneer of the 1980s\, alto saxophonist Xero Slingsby (Matthew Coe). This performance will feature special guest Alan Wilkinson (from Xero’s band) playing Xero’s original saxophone.\n\nXero was active in the local Leeds alternative and jazz music scenes from the late 1970s and formed The Works in 1983. They immediately built up a strong loyal following in Leeds and the North of England with their unique brand of "no categories" improvised music which brought together their mutual love for jazz\, punk\, funk\, rock & roll\, blues and TV soundtracks\, all tied up with a huge dose of northern working class humour. In\nmainland Europe\, countries like Holland\, Belgium and Germany celebrated street performers and Xero and the band would tour these places regularly\, widening their fan base beyond the UK.\n\nFergus Quill heard about Xero Slingsby a few years ago\, was fascinated by the man's story and fell in love with his music. It was in the same vein and spirit as the music Fergus was making and playing but Xero and The Works had produced their music over 30 years ago. He felt a kinship with Xero and wanted to make an album of his compositions as a homage to him but also to join the dots between the original Leeds alt-jazz pioneer and the vibrant DIY jazz/improvised music scene in the city today. With the blessing of Xero's widow Sally Coe\, who kindly provided some of Xero’s original homemade instruments for the session\, this project finally came to life in spring/summer 2023.\n\nFergus transcribed and then arranged some of his favorite tracks from the two albums by The Works for an album release called “¡Up Yours! Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby”. For this project\, he pulled together a band of musicians who he felt had the same fire and spirit as Xero and The Works.\n\nFergus Quill has toured this show in Leeds and Manchester\, including a live session of Xero Slingsby tunes on BBC Radio 6 (featuring on Deb Grant’s New Music Fix show in January 2024). Later this year\, they will also be making their European debut.\n\n \n\n[embed] https://youtu.be/2_1tby752i4?si=OjKPMcrQn5_DgTFX[/embed]
