SUMMARY:Sam Glaser Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:45 PM\, Music 7:30 PM - 1 set of music\n \nLine-up:\nSam Glaser - Alto saxophone\nGareth Fowler - Guitar\nChris Eldred - Piano\nNiklas Lukassen - Double bass\nMarc Michel - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nSam Glaser is an alto saxophonist\, composer and bandleader based in London\, UK. He is a virtuosic improviser and a unique voice on the UK jazz scene\, and his warm and distinctive saxophone sound\, paired with lyrical\, energetic\, and emotive playing\, have led to renown amongst musicians and listeners alike. Described by Stan Sulzmann as “A strong voice\, steeped in the tradition as well as very much a soloist for today”\, Sam’s saxophone playing is firmly grounded in the history of jazz music but takes great inspiration from modern masters including Will Vinson\, Chris Potter\, Kurt Rosenwinkel\, and Ben Wendel.\n\nThis performance is the first for Sam under his own name in several years\, after a hiatus away from creative music. The project\, entitled ‘Fear and Hope’\, is deeply personal Sam. Having taken a step away from music during the pandemic to pursue a career working in mental health\, he has recently returned to music making with renewed vigour\, and a fresh perspective on the importance of music and creativity for emotional wellbeing and community.\n\nThe project is a eulogy to the human condition\, and of suffering and resilience. The music explores different aspects of the experiences people face in relation to psychological wellbeing\, and the attitudes and discourse surrounding mental health.\n\nSam has a distinctive writing style\, inspired by many of the great contemporary jazz composers\, including Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Ben Wendel\, Walter Smith III\, and Kendrick Scott. Each piece is designed to evoke a specific mood and tell its own story\, but a considered harmonic palette\, idiosyncratic use of rhythm and groove\, and a melodic narrative weave a continuous thread throughout the music.\n\nThe quintet features eminent players on the European jazz scene\, all distinguished and highly regarded musicians in their own right. Collectively\, they bring unparalleled creativity and energy to the project.

SUMMARY:Ankora
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nKeira Chakraborty - Flute\nMali Sheard - Alto saxophone\nKlara Devlin - Trumpet\nHannah Clifton - Trumpet\nTami Adebanjo - guitar\nKezia Abuoma - Piano\nMiranda Radford - Drum kit\nHolly Reinhardt - Double bass\n\n \nAbout:\n‘Ankora’ is a London based\, eight-piece ensemble. Meeting at the hailed music organisation ‘Tomorrow’s Warriors’\, these ambitious young musicians were previously selected to perform as the band ‘Tomorrow’s Warriors Frontline’\, under the tutelage of acclaimed drummer and composer\, Romarna Campbell. ‘Ankora’ is the exciting new step the ensemble are taking to launch into the London jazz scene.\n\nThe name ‘Ankora’ is derived from the Latin word for ‘anchor’ (anchora): a symbol of groundedness\, hope and a connection to roots. These connotations are expressed through their repertoire of both originals and covers of powerful jazz tunes. The name links to an alternative meaning in Italian\, ‘again’\, marking the momentum of their rebirth as they continue their musical and artistic journey.\n\nThe band's influences include the legacies of Freddie Hubbard\, Herbie Hancock\, Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter\, while branching out to the more contemporary mastery of Esperanza Spalding\, Geri Allen\, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Kenny Kirkland. The ensemble takes inspiration from the spark and power of these jazz legends\, compositionally and in their playing.\n\nCollectively\, the members of ‘Ankora’ have already made their mark on the jazz scene through performances at venues such as Love Supreme Jazz Festival\, We Out Here\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, Dizzy’s Jazz Club (NYC)\, Brick Lane Jazz Festival and The Jazz Café. Ready for more\, the unique\, powerful voice of the ensemble is excited to embrace the wonder and diversity of today's jazz scene.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK7aYNxOpUU[/embed]
