DESCRIPTION:Doors 2:30 PM\, Music 3:00 PM\nAbout\n"Standards are engaging and accessible for musicians and listeners alike\, but nearly all of jazz’s standard repertoire is from a 50 year period ca. 1920 – 1970.\nAnother half century has since passed\, where new compositions have not been added to this shared language.\n\nJoin a collective of musicians who met through the Vortex jazz club in imagining future standards.\n\n3 – 7.30pm: accessible open jam session open to all to join in from 3pm\, for standards from the real book and "future standards". DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nByron Wallen - Trumpet\nJonny Mansfield - Vibraphone\nDaniel Kempshell - Guitar\nMenelick Claffey - Bass\nZoe Pascal - Drums\n \nAbout\nBack in 2019 Filthy Lucre commissioned Byron Wallen to write music for 8 musicians responding to Peter Shenai’s "Hurricane Bells". Peter is a contemporary artist who has cast 5 bells\, whose shapes are modeled on the structure of Hurricane Katrina - the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005. These cyclonic\, irregularly shaped bells produce a tonally complex web of sounds reminiscent of Chinese bells and gongs.\n\nGong instruments in general\, have this amazing political and communicative power: they memorialize\, they mark celebrations\, they sound alarms\, they call communities to gather around important issues.These bells based on the structure of Hurricane Katrina carry a powerful message and set of meanings with them.\n\nThis piece is an exploration of  the socio-political economic climate where their sound resonates. The reason "Hurricane Katrina" incurred such a huge loss of life and destruction was not because of the winds\, but because of the subsequent flooding\, due to insufficient levy infrastructure and the pathetic response of the US federal government.\n\nThis original work for an 8 piece band was set to premier in 2020 which was rescheduled at the Rick Mix in Feb 2022.\n\nThis is a quintet version.\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OwWByo1-g8
