SUMMARY:Evelyn Axton with strings
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\nLine Up:\nEvelyn Hill - Vocals\nLior Solomons-Wise - Piano\nEdouard Le Feuvre - Double bass\nOllie Barnett - Drums\nSonas Quartet - Strings\nAbout:\nFollowing the release of her debut EP 'The Birds' in May\, Evelyn will be performing her songs with a full band\, accompanied by a string quartet\, for the very first time. Featuring every artist who performed on the EP\, this gig will reflect the full scope of the EP's soundworld\, and celebrate the players who made it happen. From lapsteel to bass clarinet\, this is going to be a beautiful representation of how the songs have blossomed through collaboration.\n\nEvelyn is a London-based jazz vocalist and songwriter whose solo work blends the beauty and narrative of American and British folk songwriting with jazz. She is influenced by songwriters such as Joni Mitchell\, Carole King\, Labi Siffre and Nick Drake. Her vocal style is shaped by these artists alongside the jazz tradition\, taking inspiration from the greats - Ella Fitzgerald\, Chet Baker\, Carmen McRae.\n\nEvelyn’s music is marked by the jazz harmony she studied at the Guildhall School of Music\, but her lyrical vulnerability sets her apart. Originally from the Lake District\, her work is centred in nature\, taking inspiration from contemporary poets like Wendy Cope\, and using this interconnection to explore her own interior world.\n\nHaving performed at renowned venues such as The Troubadour and the Vortex Jazz Club\, Evelyn is set to release her debut EP The Birds in May 2026. Gaining traction with Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music and Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2\, this year she will perform and launch her EP across the UK. She has sung with orchestras\, choirs\, and many larger ensembles\, but this is the first time she has forged ahead as a solo artist.\n\n‘this voice […] will stop you in your tracks […] just that essence of a jazz singer - someone who’s able to capture the moment\, capture what they’re feeling in the moment\, and able to use their voice exactly how they want to - but also with that gorgeous songwriting as well’ - Jamie Cullum\, The Jazz Show on BBC Radio 2\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n9Dkr0ph_Y[/embed]

SUMMARY:Fergus McCreadie - Solo
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:15 PM\, Music 8:00 PM - 1 set of music\nAbout:\nMercury Prize-shortlisted pianist Fergus McCreadie returns to the Vortex for a very special solo show\, exploring improvisation across jazz and classical styles through the music of Brahms. Fergus will perform Brahms’ Op. 10 Ballades\, and take them as the musical DNA of his own improvisations around them.\n\nIn the first performance of this kind\, this promises to be a unique show\, not to be missed.\n\nFergus McCreadie\n\nWith a unique blend of Jazz and Scottish folk that evokes his country’s sublime landscapes\, Fergus McCreadie has developed a truly distinct voice in piano writing that is capturing the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.\n\nReleased to instant critical acclaim\, Fergus’s 2022 album ‘Forest Floor’ (Edition Records) catapulted him into the international spotlight. The album topped the UK Jazz & Blues charts\, prompted sold-out performances across the UK\, praise from BBC 6Music\, The Times\, NME and earned him a 2022 Mercury Prize shortlist nomination\, the 2022 Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year Award as well as the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year Award - the first jazz artist ever to be awarded the prize.\n\nFergus’s latest album ‘The Shieling’ (Edition Records) marks a powerful step-change for the trio - recorded in a remote cottage in North Uist\, in the Outer Hebrides\, the music drew on the wild\, elemental beauty of the surroundings to create a deeper sense of space and openness that proved an immediate success with critics and audience alike: the album shot to #1 in the OCC Jazz & Blues Chart\, prompted a studio interview with Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music\, was in heavy rotation on the Jazz FM A-list and was named one of Assai Records’ Albums of the Year.\n\nFergus also made his film score debut in 2025\, with a significant contribution to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s film Highest 2 Lowest starring Denzel Washington & A$AP Rocky\, which the trio recorded at the Manhattan Centre in New York. A huge champion of Fergus’s music\, Spike Lee also used Fergus’s song ‘Windshelter’ in a tribute video to Carmelo Anthony filmed for his induction into the NBA Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

SUMMARY:Breen & Boizi
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:45 PM\, Music 7:15 PM - 1 set of music\n \nLine-up:\nLauren Breen - Alto saxophone\nChrist-Stéphane Boizi - Trombone\nTom Sheen - Double bass\nOscar Brady - Piano\nMiranda Radford - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nLauren Breen and Christ-Stéphane Boizi are both composers and improvisers in their own right\, and now this dynamic duo have joined forces to lead a new and up-coming band. They have performed together for years in Christ-Stéphane’s sextet\, however\, this new project showcases both Breen and Boizi’s compositions\, alongside a killing young rhythm section. In previous projects they have played at venues such as Pizza Express Soho\, the Elgar Room (the Royal Albert Hall) and the Jazz Cafe\, and their years of friendship and sharing the stage\, really comes through in their frontline playing. Breen’s powerful and bright tone blends beautifully with Boizi’s warm\, soulful sound\, creating an iconic and exciting hardbop frontline. They both met at Tomorrow's Warriors and have continued studying together at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, where they are in their final year.\n\nLauren Breen is an exciting up-coming alto saxophonist who draws inspiration from a lineage of powerful and dynamic alto players\, including Cannonball Adderley\, Jackie McLean\, and Vincent Herring. These figures\, as well as learning from Tony Kofi\, Rachel Cohen and Jean Toussaint\, have played a significant role in her growth as both an improviser and a composer\, enabling her to project a rich sound over her swinging contemporary compositions\, which have a hard-bop style. She is already a part of London’s vibrant Jazz scene\, and has performed at Brick Lane Jazz Festival\, Pizza Express Live Soho and the Jazz Cafe\, to name a few.\nAn exciting new voice on the London Jazz scene\, Christ-Stéphane Boizi’s music is at once a vibrant celebration of Jazz’s great past\, very much in the present and looking to the future. Notable for his inquisitive studious approach\, relaxed poise and warm leadership\, Boizi is a student of melody\, harmony\, rhythm and soul\, striving to hone in on what makes the work of greats from across the rich history of jazz so powerful\, and to apply these learnings in his own music. He has learnt from the great Byron Wallen\, Trevor Mires and Winston Rollins.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlIee2NaEJpQqgYHiQ44uZExJx3Ezor1w&si=klY4DvWCUYt0mOPq[/embed]

SUMMARY:Rachael Cohen Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nRachael Cohen - Alto saxophone\nBruno Heinen - Piano\nAlex Hitchcock - Tenor saxophone\nTom Farmer - Double bass\nJason Brown - Drums\nAbout\nRachael Cohen\, a London-based alto saxophonist and composer\, is one of the brightest emerging stars of her generation. Her skills as a composer and improviser have gained her a great deal of attention in the UK and beyond. The Guardian notes:\n\n“Cohen takes a softly devious approach reminiscent of Lee Konitz – but\, as with the canny Cool School veteran\, the quietness is deceptive and the subtlety is in the weighting of phrases and the hipness with which she plays off the rhythm section.”\n\nOriginally hailing from the Shetland Islands\, Rachael began her musical education on the piano at age 4. She picked up the saxophone five years later\, and kindled an early passion for improvisation. When she was 12\, Miss Cohen’s family moved south from the Shetland Islands to Edinburgh\, and she enrolled in the acclaimed City of Edinburgh Music School. There she studied with some of the UK’s most admired musicians\, including saxophonist Martin Kershaw and pianist Lynda Cochrane.\n\nAs lead Alto for a number of years in both the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and Tommy Smith’s Youth Jazz Orchestra\, she cut her teeth early playing alongside great British and International artists and regularly frequenting venues top Jazz venues across the UK.

SUMMARY:Anatole Muster
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:30 PM\, Music 8:00 PM - 1 set of music\n \nLine-up:\nAnatole Muster - Accordion\nHugo Piper - Bass guitar\nKing Ike-Elechi - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nAnatole Muster is in the process of re-defining what the accordion can do\, and is actively bringing the instrument to a wider audience. The most obvious sign of that desire to experiment and innovate is what audiences see at his live shows: he plays not just the traditional button accordion\, but also two additional instruments: a Laptop keyboard\, and MIDI-controlled “breathalyzer” synth\, a brand new invention that he has co-developed with engineer Elio Fistarol.\nHe is also building a global network of close collaborators with a wide range of musical leanings\, from LA heavyweights Kiefer and Louis Cole to Tennyson from Canada and Matthew Field (Beatenberg\, M Field) from South Africa\, while also keeping a foot in jazz and fusion through leading bassists such as Hadrien Feraud from France and Federico Heliodoro from Brazil. Many of these important and formative connections have come from meeting people via Instagram messaging\, and then discovering and gradually developing shared musical enthusiasms - “Internet culture shaped me\,” says Anatole Muster.\nHis two albums have seen a rapid progression and a strengthening of his musical identity: after the release of “Wonderful Now” in early 2024\, Muster found that it was the sections where he had been boldest in experimenting that received the most enthusiastic responses\, which encouraged him to go for “the sound I really want to hear”. So the 2025 album ‘hopecore’ is a veritable tour de force. He skates effortlessly through hyperpop\, 80s jazz fusion\, Midwest emo\, plugg\, Brazilian jazz...and yet the style\, the vibe which emerges – uplifting\, optimistic\, making light of complexity – is unmistakably Anatole’s.\n\nHe emerged in summer 2025 with first class honours degree from his time as a student on the jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, an experience which above all gave him the chance to work with teachers who have mentored some of the most creative new voices in music\, and who reinforced and encouraged his individuality.\n\nAs Anatole Muster’s collaborations develop\, a distinctive\, expressive\, and perhaps above all joyous musical voice is emerging\, and getting noticed. His total streams across all platforms approach ten million\, and the audiences at recent live shows – two sold out shows at Ronnie Scott's\, Rio Montreux Jazz Festival\, a completely full Jazz Cafe album launch... – have been “genuinely excited” by this “crazy talent”.\n\nPromoters and critics are noticing too:\n- “His unique way of blending this instrument with contemporary and urban sounds gives the accordion a new lease of life\, and adds a fresh edge to his music\, sometimes taking it into pop\, soul or electro territory.” (Viviane Rychner Raouf\, Montreux Artists Foundation)\n- “His effervescent playing really shines.” (Jazzwise).\n- “He knows how to communicate joy.” (UK Jazz News)\n- “He is just one of the most talented young musicians out there. I love his playing\, his note choice\, his production\, his attitude\, his choice of musicians—he's truly superlative.” (Anthony Garone / Make Weird Music.”)\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/9b_u2fk6c-g?si=FeI8eLuyNAvgKp0r[/embed]

His recordings have been praised as “cutting edge” (Sequence 21)\, while containing “a profound concept […] triumphant […] fascinating” (Pop Matters). As a player\, he has been noted for bringing “assurance\, charisma\, and infectious enthusiasm” (Steve Smith) to his performances and manifesting “exhilarating energy\, charisma\, and a canny ability to transform the complex and even inscrutable into sophisticated yet joyful noise” (Allmusic.com).\n\nGolub is in demand as a pianist on New York’s jazz\, creative music\, and world music stages\, performing and recording with a wide variety of artists such as Layale Chaker\, DoYeon Kim\, Lesley Mok\, Anna Webber\, Amir ElSaffar\, Brad Shepik\, Aynur Doğan\, and Seajun Kwon. SUMMARY:Reuben Goldmark Trio
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nReuben Goldmark - Piano\nFreddie Jensen - Double bass\nJonah Evans - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nReuben Goldmark returns to the Vortex with his trio to premiere a brand new set of original compositions.\n\nOver the past four years\, the band has developed a unique approach to the classic piano trio format. Lyrical melodies and hooks playfully dance over high-tech beats and grooves that seem to have a life of their own — constantly in flux and transforming at will. Their sound is compact and focused\, with the leader’s unmistakable piano touch in the foreground. United as a single entity\, they navigate intricate polyrhythms and metric modulations with such ease that the complexity fades into the periphery\, revealing music filled with emotion and rooted in joy.\n\nReuben was a finalist in the esteemed BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition and his compositions were featured on BBC 4 and BBC Radio 3. He was awarded the Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition in both 2022 and 2023\, making him the first ever back-to-back recipient of the award. As a performer\, he has graced numerous prestigious venues across the UK\, including select appearances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival\, Snape Maltings as part of the Aldeburgh Festival and Saffron Hall. Reuben is a Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Young Artist. He recorded his debut album in April 2025. Produced by mentor and friend Kit Downes\, it is set to be released in mid-2027 and will also feature two of Amsterdam’s most in demand musicians: Reinier Baas on guitar and Ketija Ringa-Karahona on flute.

His music is a blend of his Caribbean roots with the harmonic and improvisational complexities of jazz\, creating a lively and eclectic meld all his own.\n\nBorn in Trinidad\, Leon Foster Thomas has proven through his albums and performances that the steel pan has the musical sophistication to be taken as seriously in the jazz universe as the more well-known vibraphone. Winner of the World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet competition of 2002 and 2004\, critics laud him as “…masterful with impeccable musicianship” (When Steel Talks); “a benevolent wizard” (Venice Magazine).\n\nLeon has collaborated with legendary artists in the jazz scene and beyond including Hugh Masekela\, Randy Brecker\, Sammy Figueroa\, Vince Mendoza\, Dolly Parton\, John Beasley\, Mino Cinelu\, Orphy Robinson\, Cyril Neville\, Ky-Mani Marley and many more. He also played a significant part in Her Late Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.\n\nInspired as much by the melodic poetry of the great Keith Jarrett’s piano sound as Trinidad’s celebrated steel pan heritage\, Leon has taken the instrument to new heights\, giving it a seriously fresh makeover in how it is now viewed across the music world. More than just a Carnival instrument\, the chromatically-scaled steel pan has seen\, in Leon’s hands\, a significant step forward in its perception as an instrument of improvisational artistry and expression.

SUMMARY:Glaser/Copus/Barford/Martin Septet
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nSam Glaser - Alto saxophone\nJames Copus - Trumpet\nTom Barford - Tenor Saxophone\nOlli Martin - trombone\nWill Barry - Piano\nWill Sach - Double bass\nWill Cleasby - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nThis collaborative septet features a stunning line-up of leading musicians on the UK jazz scene who come together in this format for the first time to celebrate seminal septet recordings from the classic jazz canon. You can expect to hear arrangements and transcriptions of compositions by Joe Henderson\, Art Farmer\, Thelonious Monk\, Wynton Marsalis\, and many more\, with these incredible musicians putting their own stamp on the music\, drawing from influences far and wide.\n\nSam Glaser\, James Copus\, Tom Barford and Olli Martin have known each other as friends and musical colleagues for over 15 years. Having studied together at the Royal Academy of Music\, and having been house-mates for several years\, this collaboration is long overdue. Each have pursued their own path musically and received recognition for their playing\, and with the four of them at the front of this septet\, you can expect a high-octane performance.\n\nThey are joined by a tour-de-force rhythm section\, comprising Will Barry\, Will Sach\, and Will Cleasby. These musicians\, each renowned individually for virtuosic playing and limitless creativity\, often come together to form one of the notorious rhythm sections in the UK. Between them\, they have toured internationally with the likes of Wynton Marsalis\, Jerry Bergonzi\, Joe Farnsworth\, Eddie Henderson\, and Kurt Elling.
