SUMMARY:Byron Wallen’s Hurricane Bells
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nByron Wallen - Trumpet\nJonny Mansfield - Vibraphone\nDaniel Kempshell - Guitar\nMenelick Claffey - Bass\nZoe Pascal - Drums\n \nAbout\nBack in 2019 Filthy Lucre commissioned Byron Wallen to write music for 8 musicians responding to Peter Shenai’s "Hurricane Bells". Peter is a contemporary artist who has cast 5 bells\, whose shapes are modeled on the structure of Hurricane Katrina - the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005. These cyclonic\, irregularly shaped bells produce a tonally complex web of sounds reminiscent of Chinese bells and gongs.\n\nGong instruments in general\, have this amazing political and communicative power: they memorialize\, they mark celebrations\, they sound alarms\, they call communities to gather around important issues. These bells based on the structure of Hurricane Katrina carry a powerful message and set of meanings with them.\n\nThis piece is an exploration of  the socio-political economic climate where their sound resonates. The reason "Hurricane Katrina" incurred such a huge loss of life and destruction was not because of the winds\, but because of the subsequent flooding\, due to insufficient levy infrastructure and the pathetic response of the US federal government.\n\nThis original work for an 8 piece band was set to premier in 2020 which was rescheduled at the Rick Mix in Feb 2022.\n\nThis is a quintet version.\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OwWByo1-g8

SUMMARY:Li-chin Li / John Butcher / Julian Woods
DESCRIPTION:Doors 6:45 PM\, Music 7:15 PM - 1 set of music\n \nLine-up:\nJulian Woods - Guitar\nLi-chin Li - Sheng\nJohn Butcher - Soprano Saxophone\n\n \nAbout:\nThe second meeting of this truly unique improvising trio\, consisting of Paris-based Chinese traditional music performer and rising contemporary music star Li-chin Li on Sheng\, prolific free improviser and legendary innovator John Butcher on saxophones\, and eclectic multi-instrumentalist and Vortex Whirlpool alumnus Julian Woods on microtonal electric guitar.\n\nThe trio first convened in spring 2025\, playing to a packed house at Ryan's Bar in Stoke Newington as part of Julian's 'Matador' concert series.\n\nWhile conceived half a world away and nearly 3000 years apart\, the saxophone and the sheng (an ancient Chinese polyphonic free reed instrument) form a surprisingly natural sonic partnership in the hands of John and Li-chin\, with both exploring the full register and timbral possibilities of their instruments\, spurred on by Julian's dynamic and provocative guitar playing.\n\nLi-Chin Li is a Sheng performer from Taiwan. She majored in Chinese Music at the Tainan National University of the Arts. After graduation\, she worked for the prestigious Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.\n\nRecently\, she has been selected as a member of IRCAM concert de l'atelier d'improvisation\, ManiFeste-2022\, and she has guested with Ensemble LINEA and Ensemble CAIRN in 2022. She is a grantee of the Asian Culture Council in New York in 2023.\n\nJohn Butcher is well known as a saxophonist who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of time and place. His music ranges through improvisation\, his own compositions\, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback and unusual acoustics. Since the early 80s he has collaborated with hundreds of artists – including Derek Bailey\, Rhodri Davies\, Andy Moor\, Phil Minton\, Christian Marclay\, Eddie Prévost\, Magda Mayas\, Spontaneous Music Ensemble\, Sophie Agnel\, Gino Robair\, Mark Sanders\, John Tilbury\, Okkyung Lee\, John Edwards\, Chris Corsano\, Polwechsel and Steve Beresford.\n\nJulian Woods is a musician\, composer and improviser based in London. In 2024\, he graduated with a distinction in Jazz Performance from the Guildhall School of Music in London. He has recently performed at the Vortex Jazz Club\, Cafe OTO\, Wigmore Hall\, Porgy & Bess (Vienna)\, INNtoene Jazz Festival\, and Pizza Express. He performs on guitars (microtonal or regular)\, bass guitars (fretted or fretless)\, and double bass.\n\nJulian's musical interests include microtonality\, free improvisation\, polystylism and maximalism. His influences include John Zorn\, Marc Ribot\, Anton Webern\, Gyorgy Ligeti\, Harry Partch\, John Cage and Alex Paxton. He is involved in a variety of projects\, including co-directing the London Improvisers Orchestra\, leading his own original music ensembles\, collaborating with the Guildhall New Music Society\, and was a member of the 2024-2025 cohort of the Vortex Jazz Club's Whirlpool Collective.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpZPm3hFqSw[/embed]

SUMMARY:Queer Jazz (Faye Thompson / Yumé NET / Jonathan Enser / Arowah)
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\nAbout:\nQueer Jazz\, founded by Tina Edwards and Arowah\, exists to platform\, nurture and celebrate the emerging queer jazz scene. For this night they have assembled a very special quartet of exceptional and experimental musicians from the emerging queer jazz scene.\n\nFaye Thompson\n\nFaye Thompson is a saxophone + electronics specialist from the North-East of England\, now based in South-East London. As a devotee to interfacing her horn and her effects rig\, she tends to have more in common with synthesists and sound designers than with other saxophonists\, using her body and lungs as the oscillator at the heart of the whole system. Through her\, influences from folk\, dub\, electronica\, and modern classical are all digested to culminate in a taste for performance prioritising colour and space – with her jazz credentials tucked away in her back pocket for when a bit of shredding is called for.\n\nYumé NET\n\nAs our lives move more and more online\, the boundaries between the natural and digital world become increasingly blurry. Yumé NET is interested in interrogating these boundaries. Whether it's in her research as a bioelectronics PhD student developing electronics that interface with the human nervous system. Or in her music\, where she crafts coruscating and otherworldly musical landscapes that explore what it means to be human in an increasingly online society. Using a meld of modern jazz and experimental electronic music as her framework\, Yumé sets out to tell stories about the very personal and very human aspects of her life (platonic love\, trans joy\, identity\, bigotry\, community) and how technology has transformed them. Tender but heavy\, calculated but full of love\, her music invites the listener to join her in exploring what lies between and beyond the 0s and 1s.\n\nJonathan Enser\n\nJonathan Enser (Nubiyan Twist)\, a multi-instrumentalist and composer. MATTERS UNKNOWN is the debut project from Jonathan Enser\, multi-instrumentalist and composer\, and the brass contributor to Nubiyan Twist. He has put together an ensemble that features some of the best musicians in the UK\, including Nerija\, Emma Jean Thackray\, Nala Sinephro and Noya Rao\n\nArowah\n\nArowah sees the role of an artist as a philosopher\, community builder and healer\, with their work being a meditation on the social and the spiritual. Having danced around many scenes and styles including jazz\, punk\, experimental\, classical\, disco and dance\, they have always remained uncategorizable\, defined only by fluidity.\nThey move freely from composing for orchestra to performing on line-ups with some of the UK’s most exciting DIY and indie bands\, and to playing Afro-Brazilian jazz mainstage at Brazil’s largest Black culture festival. A familiar face across several music scenes\, they’ve performed with Angel Bat David\, Rebecca Vasmant\, Jalen Ngonda and Liv Winter\, supported Ishmael Ensemble\, Lady Blackbird\, Steam Down and Public Service Broadcasting and been label mates with Sports Team\, English Teacher\, Binker and Moses and Theon Cross. Self-releasing various artist projects including Jelly Cleaver\, B.H.A.M. and All Day Breakfast Cafe\, they have amassed 17 million streams across all platforms.

SUMMARY:Loz Speyer's INNER SPACE with James Allsopp
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nLoz Speyer - Trumpet & Flugelhorn\nDee Byrne - Alto saxophone\nJames Allsopp - Tenor Saxophone\nLarry Bartley - Double bass\nGary Willcox - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nInner Space plays Jazz of a rare warmth and immediacy - compositions for improvisers with roots in both jazz and free playing. Speyer’s writing for the band creates space for the group to explore new areas and discover where the music might GO! - with a set of Jazz Portraits that celebrate the innovators of Free Jazz\, while drawing deeply on the Jazz tradition\, back to Bebop and New Orleans. Each piece evolves a life of its own as revealed in the here and NOW by these five distinctive musicians.\n\n"One of the happiest evenings I've heard in jazz for many a long night... Music as rare as this defies description. Go along and see them!” - Karl Dallas\, the Morning Star\n\nInner Space has been stirring things up lately as an augmented lineup playing the music of Sun Ra. On this night they return to their home ground as a quintet playing Speyer’s originals\, this time with special guest James Allsopp - “perhaps the most gifted British saxophonist of his generation\, not to mention the most adaptable” (Underscore music magazine). A star player in his own right\, James also featured in Loz’s earlier Sun Ra project\, Arkestration; and this new INNER SPACE collaboration is all set to fire up the bandstand with fresh ideas and new directions.\n\n“Three recordings in 20 years for Inner Space… indicates a patient cultivation of their art. And the way that the group sound remains identifiable even though Speyer is the only player all the band’s incarnations have in common shows the value of a clear musical vision…\n\n"The composing is reliably successful at offering engaging vehicles for extemporisation. But this dance between freedom and form needs more than that to succeed. Much of the time it relies on mainly motivic improvisation\, with its particular demands. Speyer leads the way in meeting them. Rather like the great Bobby Bradford to my ear\, just when you feel a solo excursion is beginning to fade he is able to apply the Ornette Coleman method of inflating another bubble of new melody\, apparently at will.\n\n"That’s something only the best players in this school can bring off consistently ... As the CD testifies\, it makes their live performance a richly rewarding affair. Hearing them do it again in person shows a band going from strength to strength.”\n\nJon Turney\, UK Jazz News\n\nwww.lozspeyer.com\n\nhttps://spherical-records.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-leipzig\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcrHlioPv4I[/embed]

SUMMARY:M Field
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nMatthew Field - Guitar\n\nBand TBC\nAbout\nAnyone familiar with Matthew Field will know that staying in one lane isn’t really what he does. As the driving creative force behind Beatenberg\, he’s helped shape a whole new music lexicon. Over two albums\, the Cape Town-based trio alchemised a distinctive global sound\, fusing modern pop production with complex rhythms\, lilting indie rock and folk. His work with South African pop maverick Tresor\, meanwhile\, showed he could take his magpie approach and ear for a winning melody into a whole new sphere.\n\nMusic was present from the very beginning. Field’s mother\, a visual artist\, would play Bach and Mozart while she worked in her studio as he drew nearby. His pianist father later became a jingle writer and began getting Field to help him while he was still in early high school. Though he admits he sometimes complained\, the experience proved invaluable. It also gave him access to a recording studio\, a place which\, when he was there on his own\, “became a very free and exciting place for me.”\n\nThat rich creative upbringing has helped shape one of the most distinctive voices in modern South African music. Field’s songwriting has produced the country’s biggest ever airplay hit\, Pluto\, and helped Beatenberg win seven SA Music Awards for their 2014 debut\, The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg.\n\nNow comes a new chapter. M Field places his songwriting in a new sonic world — one that is lusher\, richer and even easier to sink into — while still carrying the melodic instinct and adventurous spirit that have always defined his music.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rSomGzKZVQ[/embed]

Her work received international press reviews\, and since its release she has toured across the UK\, Europe\, Senegal and Brazil\, including a sold-out show at the EFG London Jazz Festival and appearances on BBC One.\n\n“An immensely promising debut and dizzyingly diverse listen… a writer of serious potential” – Jazzwise\n\n“Irresistible sound\, music that defies any musical genres” – Jazz FM\n\nBlending jazz with global influences shaped by her travels\, international collaborations and life in multicultural London\, Noga’s music moves between intimacy and powerful collective energy. Singing in English and Hebrew\, her songs weave deeply personal stories with wider global and social themes\, creating performances known for their emotional depth and strong connection with audiences.\n\nThe evening will also feature a unique live recording and filming of her new song Rehumanise\, a response to the ongoing war and the dehumanisation we are witnessing across the world. By joining\, you become part of this collective moment — and of a song calling to reconnect with our shared humanity\, to be released as a single and video.\n\n \n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZrfc9WILdc[/embed]\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbQ4CrDYeO0[/embed]\n\n[embed]https://open.spotify.com/album/1pjBAh5A9THFN6gwCjevgs?si=UbKAZczZTDyi3_3NXi7Z6g[/embed]

SUMMARY:EXTRA - Peter Evans/Petter Eldh/Jim Black (2 Shows)
DESCRIPTION:Timings:\n1st Show\nDoors 7:00 PM\, Music 7:30 PM – 1 set of music\n2nd Show\nDoors 9:00 PM\, Music 9:30 PM – 1 set of music\n \n\n\n\nLine-up:\nPeter Evans - trumpet\nPetter Eldh - bass\, sampler\nJim Black - drums\, laptop\nAbout:\nIn EXTRA\, three of contemporary music’s most fearless improvisers collide in a sonic high-speed chase that redefines what a jazz trio can be. Far from revisiting standards or offering tidy interplay\, the group constructs an explosive\, multilayered language where glitchy electronics\, hardcore grooves\, and unruly textures crash into one another—often within a single phrase.\n\nThe band fuses Evans’ sculptural trumpet vocabularies with Eldh’s hyperactive bass playing and Jim Black’s volatile rhythmic outbursts. The result is a kinetic\, shape-shifting sound world where every moment is packed with risk and surprise. Each musician pushes the others into new terrain: Evans fires compressed bursts of sound or labyrinthine melodic spirals\, Eldh loops\, twists\, and distorts the pulse\, while Black triggers acoustic and electronic ruptures that defy easy categorization.\n\nDescribed as “relentless in the best way” (Free Jazz Collective)\, EXTRA creates music that is at once deeply technical and gleefully anarchic. It is a band with no brakes\, where even moments of silence feel charged with potential energy. Their debut album\, EXTRA (2024\, We Jazz Records)\, has been called “one of the best jazz records of the year” (Monolith Cocktail)\, celebrated for its urgent pace and wild\, genre-bending unpredictability.\n\nEXTRA isn’t just a band—it’s a dare. For listeners ready to be hurled into the unexpected\, this trio offers the thrill of pure musical combustion\, with no safety net in sight.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVMsgT9Hq0s&t[/embed]

DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 set(s) of music\n \nLine-up:\nAlex Webb piano/MD - Piano\nOllie Wilby - Baritone saxophone\nAndy Davis - Trumpet\nDavid Lalljee - trombone\nDave Green - Double bass\nRobert Fowler - Tenor Saxophone\nWinston Clifford - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout\n‘A terrific band with a rhythm section as good as any on the planet’ – Blue Light\, magazine of the Duke Ellington Society UK\n\n'It's hard to think of a better way to experience the magic of Ellington\, given that the maestro and his associates are all gone; it's the closest thing we'll get to experiencing live Duke in 2025' - Jazzwise\n\n‘A wonderful night’s live music paying tribute to one of the greats’- ArcanaFM\n\n‘The Pocket Ellington\, as the pianist Alex Webb calls his septet devoted to the music of the immortal Duke\, turns out to be a very good idea’ – thebluemoment.com\n\n‘It's called 'The Pocket Ellington'\, but there is nothing about this band that is small. A big sound and some really high-quality arrangements wowed the audience’ - Hilaryseabrook.blogspot.com\n\nBorn out of pianist/arranger Alex Webb’s love of Ellington\, The Pocket Ellington manages what ought to be impossible – creating a classic Ellingtonian sound with just four horns and a rhythm section. But with a top-drawer horn section\, and with veteran bassist Dave Green and powerhouse drummer Winston Clifford providing the swing\, the group does justice to classic Ellingtonia - and a lot more.\n\nGreat charts from the 1930s\, 1940s and 1950s – Main Stem\, Rain Check\, Cotton Tail\, Chelsea Bridge\, Such Sweet Thunder and others - are presented in clever new arrangements which evoke the period but also offer solo space to these top-flight musicians.\n\nThe repertoire also includes pieces from artists and arrangers who were influenced by the Duke – Charles Mingus\, Thelonious Monk and Gil Evans. It’s a big sound from a pocket band.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/NlMkkJDkn9k?si=_2BMlBxyeJ0qgKvP https://youtu.be/FTPh6U_bw6Y?si=LZfEvBjLS-53UE7v[/embed]

SUMMARY:Andrea Di Biase's Oltremare
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nAndrea Di Biase - Double bass\nIvo Neame - Piano\nJames Allsopp - Tenor Saxophone\nMichael Chillingworth - Alto Saxophone\nJon Scott - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nOltremare is an Italian word meaning "oversea". The Band plays on the differences of Andrea Di Biase's two musical worlds\, divided by the sea: one is rooted in his native Italy with the melodic and poetic approach of Italian masters such as Nino Rota and the band's first pianist Antonio Zambrini; the other is rooted in UK\, his country of adoption\, with the harmonic and rhythmic intuitions of British artists such as Kenny Wheeler\, who invited Andrea to play with his Trio at Vortex in 2011.\n\nAndrea's idea of building a bridge between two sides of the sea is reflected in the choice of surrounding himself with the most refined British improvisers: the inventiveness of star pianist Ivo Neame\, the lush sound of virtuoso saxophonist James Allsopp\, the blistering speed of alto saxophonist Michael Chillingworth and the unrelenting energy of Gogo Penguin's drummer Jon Scott.\n\nOltremare Quartet’s first album "Uncommon Nonsense" was released by Babel Label. The band will premiere at Vortex a new repertoire they are about to record for their second album.\n\n

SUMMARY:Matt Anderson Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nMatt Anderson - Tenor saxophone\nAlberto Palau - Piano\nJay Davis - Drum kit\nWill Harris - Double bass\n\n \nAbout:\nCelebrating ten years together as a band\, the Matt Anderson Quartet performs selections from their three albums as well as new material. Their latest release Live at Leeds Jazz Festival was awarded four stars by Jazzwise\, who also praised the “well-integrated\, swinging and supremely confident ensemble… [with] a soulful depth to his musicality that underpins the academic attention to detail”. Performing mostly original music\, the roots of jazz are never far away\, with a rhythmic feel and blues sensibility that is anchored in the tradition\, however the music also expands into other areas such as modal and contemporary harmony and British folk-style melodies\, giving the group a distinctive identity.\n\nBorn in the North Yorkshire Moors\, the son of a music teacher and based in Leeds for a time\, Matt has lived in London since 2015. Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital\, he has since performed with artists/bands such as Greg Hutchinson (with the Jiannis Pavlidis Quintet)\, Ivo Neame\, the Gareth Lockrane and Calum Gourlay big bands\, Jamie Doe’s Magic Lantern and Hannes Riepler\, and he has also toured in New Zealand\, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. In 2023\, he became a D’Addario Woodwinds artist and was also made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for contributions to the music industry.\n\nThe band met during Masters studies at the Royal Academy of Music in 2015\, forging an instant bond which has kept them together since. Alberto Palau is an immensely talented pianist originally from Valencia\, Spain. Now based in London\, his experiences living in Boston and New York and working with artists such as Perico Sambeat and Charles McPherson make him much in-demand from leading British musicians. Jay Davis is one of the busiest drummers on the London scene\, featuring for example in Mark Lockheart’s Shapeshifter and his own group BadTrad. Will Harris’ remarkable bass playing has put him in high demand in the South-West where he has been based for many years\, and after spending time in London he has become an increasingly popular choice of bassist in the capital as well.\n\nWorking together frequently over the past ten years\, the band have developed a deep connection\, touring extensively across the U.K. as well as appearing at venues such as the Bimhuis\, Amsterdam; Jamboree\, Barcelona and Jimmy Glass\, Valencia and receiving support from Help Musicians and Arts Council England.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM4fawOZzi8[/embed]

The breadth of her practice makes this first-time duo a very exciting prospect.\n\nSmyth’s long-standing trio with bassist John Edwards and drummer Mark Sanders has been making what The Morning Star called the “music of an awakened universe” for more than a decade. Edwards\, active since the 1980s\, is one of Europe's most renowned players in creative free jazz\, with collaborations including Peter Brötzmann\, Joe McPhee\, Evan Parker and Roscoe Mitchell. Sanders brings a career spanning multiple genres to his free improvisation work\, having performed with Roscoe Mitchell\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Derek Bailey and Shabaka Hutchings\, and appears on over 170 releases. SUMMARY:Nick Ramm Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\n \nLine-up:\nNick Ramm - Piano\nPete Wareham - Tenor saxophone & Flute\nByron Wallen - Trumpet\nTom Herbert - Double bass\nCorrie Dick - Drum kit\n\n \nAbout:\nNick Ramm Ensemble is proud to present fresh compositions drawing from Ramm's roots in souful piano and contemporary jazz\n\nThis all-acoustic line-up of piano\, double bass and drum kit is augmented by two horns – tenor saxophone and trumpet. In much of the writing you will hear the horns playing together like\, for example\, in the Miles Davis bands of the fifties and sixties. Aside from modern jazz roots\, stylistically\, the material draws from a wide palette of influences: Brazilian\, Cuban\, Ghanaian music\, contemporary funky flavours\, minimal and abstract moments.\n\nMany of the main themes are written in the minor key but balanced by another section with brighter tonalities. The fast paced hard bop number 'Payroll'\, the laid back high-life groove of 'Song For My Father' and the slow cycles of 'Little White Petals' are three contrasting examples from the set.\n\nThe band has come about thanks\, in part\, to his residency at live music venue Mu.ldn in Haggerston\, London\, where\, since 2023\, he performs often as a duo or trio. After months of playing covers or sometimes improvising freely\, new melodies and riffs crystallised and a whole set was formed. The group concept was then enlarged to a five-piece which makes up the ensemble.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaOieEELMZA[/embed]

SUMMARY:Evelyn Axton with strings
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:45 PM\, Music 8:30 PM - 2 sets of music\nLine Up:\nEvelyn Hill - Vocals\nLior Solomons-Wise - Piano\nEdouard Le Feuvre - Double bass\nOllie Barnett - Drums\nSonas Quartet - Strings\nAbout:\nFollowing the release of her debut EP 'The Birds' in May\, Evelyn will be performing her songs with a full band\, accompanied by a string quartet\, for the very first time. Featuring every artist who performed on the EP\, this gig will reflect the full scope of the EP's soundworld\, and celebrate the players who made it happen. From lapsteel to bass clarinet\, this is going to be a beautiful representation of how the songs have blossomed through collaboration.\n\nEvelyn is a London-based jazz vocalist and songwriter whose solo work blends the beauty and narrative of American and British folk songwriting with jazz. She is influenced by songwriters such as Joni Mitchell\, Carole King\, Labi Siffre and Nick Drake. Her vocal style is shaped by these artists alongside the jazz tradition\, taking inspiration from the greats - Ella Fitzgerald\, Chet Baker\, Carmen McRae.\n\nEvelyn’s music is marked by the jazz harmony she studied at the Guildhall School of Music\, but her lyrical vulnerability sets her apart. Originally from the Lake District\, her work is centred in nature\, taking inspiration from contemporary poets like Wendy Cope\, and using this interconnection to explore her own interior world.\n\nHaving performed at renowned venues such as The Troubadour and the Vortex Jazz Club\, Evelyn is set to release her debut EP The Birds in May 2026. Gaining traction with Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music and Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2\, this year she will perform and launch her EP across the UK. She has sung with orchestras\, choirs\, and many larger ensembles\, but this is the first time she has forged ahead as a solo artist.\n\n‘this voice […] will stop you in your tracks […] just that essence of a jazz singer - someone who’s able to capture the moment\, capture what they’re feeling in the moment\, and able to use their voice exactly how they want to - but also with that gorgeous songwriting as well’ - Jamie Cullum\, The Jazz Show on BBC Radio 2\n\n \n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n9Dkr0ph_Y[/embed]

SUMMARY:Fergus McCreadie - Solo
DESCRIPTION:Doors 7:15 PM\, Music 8:00 PM - 1 set of music\nAbout:\nMercury Prize-shortlisted pianist Fergus McCreadie returns to the Vortex for a very special solo show\, exploring improvisation across jazz and classical styles through the music of Brahms. Fergus will perform Brahms’ Op. 10 Ballades\, and take them as the musical DNA of his own improvisations around them.\n\nIn the first performance of this kind\, this promises to be a unique show\, not to be missed.\n\nFergus McCreadie\n\nWith a unique blend of Jazz and Scottish folk that evokes his country’s sublime landscapes\, Fergus McCreadie has developed a truly distinct voice in piano writing that is capturing the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.\n\nReleased to instant critical acclaim\, Fergus’s 2022 album ‘Forest Floor’ (Edition Records) catapulted him into the international spotlight. The album topped the UK Jazz & Blues charts\, prompted sold-out performances across the UK\, praise from BBC 6Music\, The Times\, NME and earned him a 2022 Mercury Prize shortlist nomination\, the 2022 Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year Award as well as the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year Award - the first jazz artist ever to be awarded the prize.\n\nFergus’s latest album ‘The Shieling’ (Edition Records) marks a powerful step-change for the trio - recorded in a remote cottage in North Uist\, in the Outer Hebrides\, the music drew on the wild\, elemental beauty of the surroundings to create a deeper sense of space and openness that proved an immediate success with critics and audience alike: the album shot to #1 in the OCC Jazz & Blues Chart\, prompted a studio interview with Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music\, was in heavy rotation on the Jazz FM A-list and was named one of Assai Records’ Albums of the Year.\n\nFergus also made his film score debut in 2025\, with a significant contribution to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s film Highest 2 Lowest starring Denzel Washington & A$AP Rocky\, which the trio recorded at the Manhattan Centre in New York. A huge champion of Fergus’s music\, Spike Lee also used Fergus’s song ‘Windshelter’ in a tribute video to Carmelo Anthony filmed for his induction into the NBA Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
