About

The “New Masters” quintet brings together a group of outstanding younger musicians who I met in the main on London’s thriving jam session scene after the Covid curtain lifted in 2021.

As well as leading his own ensembles bassist Simon Woolf has toured with and accompanied American legends including (most recently) Ralph Moore, Harry Allen, Chris Cheek, Grant Stewart, Tal Farlow, Howard Alden & Sheryl Bailey and been a part of groups led by UK giants including Andy Panayi, Bobby Wellins, Geoff Simkins, Dave Cliff & Peter Jacobsen.

Donovan Haffner – Alto Saxophone; very much the rising star, recently achieved 1st class honours at the RAM and is hoping to start studies in NYC next year. Catch him while you can!

Mike Soper – Trumpet & Flugelhorn; brings the same unique clarity and inventiveness to everything from Dixieland to avant-garde.

Fraser Urquhart –Piano; recently relocated from Edinburgh, shares my passion for Jimmy Rowles, one of the great originals of jazz. ‘Nuff said.

Joe Edwards – Drums; a swinging drummer with impeccable taste and dynamics, Joe has a degree in engineering and is first call percussionist in the Brighton area.

The Music is a retrospective of writing I have done for various small groups over the past four decades. An even balance of Originals and Arrangements or, as I prefer to describe them, “Derivatives and Derangements”
