About:

Bassist, band leader and Co-Founder of Tomorrow’s Warriors, Gary Crosby OBE leads his quintet in a celebration of the life, music, and impact of one of the most iconic jazz innovators of all time, Miles Davis.

Focussing on the era defined by the formidable Second Great Quintet, featuring Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams, Gary will be delving deep into the ground-breaking recordings and musical approach that were the hallmarks of the Quintet between 1964 and 1968.

For this special Deal Jazz Festival concert, in the year that marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miles Davis, Gary will be joined by Tomorrow’s Warriors Emerging Artist and BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year finalist Klara Devlin (trumpet), Denys Baptiste (sax), Andrew McCormack (piano), and Rod Youngs (drums).

Discussing the impact that Miles Davis made, Gary Crosby explains “Musically Miles didn’t break the rules in jazz, he CHANGED the rules! He stripped everything back but kept the musicality central. His music had this incredible swing, but it didn’t just swing hard, it had this new articulate vibe that changed how musicians played together.

Ron Carter summed it up best, “That band was a laboratory and Miles was the head chemist” – what they concocted was a new musical language!”
