About:
Emilia Märtensson & Matt Robinson bring together lyrical songwriting, improvisation, and contemporary European jazz in music that is both intimate and expansive. Their long-standing musical partnership centres on a shared love of space, clarity, and expressive storytelling, creating performances that are immersive, spontaneous, and deeply connected.
Parliamentary Jazz Award-winning vocalist Emilia Märtensson is recognised as one of the most distinctive voices in UK jazz, celebrated for her expressive tone and emotionally nuanced storytelling. The Observer described her as “the new face of British jazz,” while Jazzwise praised her as “a voice of quite remarkable expressive depth.”
Pianist, composer, and producer Matt Robinson, known for his work with Snowpoet, is acclaimed for his melodic improvisations, harmonic richness, and imaginative use of piano, synthesisers, and live electronics.
Drawing inspiration from iconic European jazz duos such as Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft and Norma Winstone & John Taylor, Märtensson and Robinson subtly reimagine the voice-piano format through improvisation, extended techniques, and understated electronics, while preserving its essential intimacy.
For this performance, the duo is joined by acclaimed saxophonist Adam Waldmann, bassist Max Luthert, and drummer Will Glaser. Together, the quintet expands the duo’s finely detailed musical world into a richly textured ensemble, balancing openness, lyricism, and collective improvisation.
