Vortex discussion 64 – Does jazz need to (re)radicalise?

At a recent meeting in Austria, various jazz promoters and radio journalists from across Europe all agreed that jazz in particular (and culture in general) is being branded a ‘luxury’ by governments and runs the risk that, despite support through the pandemic, it may be one of the first sectors being starved of funding.

What do we do about it? Jazz itself has its roots in radical activity, be it racial equality in the US, or even support for the miners and others in the UK in the 60s. However, for the past 40 years or so, it has won a battle to be part of the cultural ‘system’. This now runs the risk of being lost. So how can we find ways forward to help us re-establish our status, with or without government support.

Led by Oliver Weindling, Vortex director, join in on Zoom either actively or passively. All welcome.
