TUMBATARECO is a sound without translation, a rhythm open to interpretation, a composition yet to be composed that cannot be written down … a dynamic and cohesive free-jazz TRIO, with ears wide open to the whole spectrum of moods, textures and sounds. It brings together three musicians with multiple interconnections going back decades, giving the music a feeling of mutual trust and cohesion that isn’t so easy to find. The TRIO format of trumpet, bass and drums sets out a wide open space in which to clearly hear every member of it contributing in relation the whole … spontaneous combustion by:

LOZ SPEYER (trumpet, flugelhorn), whose improv trajectory began in workshops with John Stevens and Keith Rowe, and at West Square with Phil Wachsmann – and continued as an integral part of By Pass Now Open with Hugh Metcalfe, Freetrio with Tony Marsh, another trio with Tony Bianco, David Leahy’s Musicians in Space, London Improvisers Orchestra, art-music collaboration Spherical Improv, Aurelie Freoua’s Résonances.

MARCIO MATTOS (bass), whose playing credits go back to the early 70s and include Evan Parker, John Stevens, John Surman, Roswell Rudd, Dewey Redman, By Pass Now Open, London Improvisers Orchestra, David Leahy’s Musicians in Space, Roscoe Mitchell and Marylin Crispell

DAVE FOWLER (drums), whose musical accomplices include Jim Dvorak, Alan Wilkinson, Roberto Bellatalla, Harrison Smith, Neil Metcalfe, Elton Dean, Maggie Nicols, Loz Speyer, Jerry Wigens, Sue Lynch, London Improvisers Orchestra …

AURELIE FREOUA, since completed an MA in Fine Art at Camberwell has been improvising live painting in response to music, with shows in London Jazz Festival, and at Inntöne Jazz Festival, Austria. She has had several solo shows in London, her mural ‘Misterioso’ in Shoreditch formed the backdrop for ‘Dancing Wall’ performance, and she has taken part in workshops at Tate Exchange, Tate Modern. Her own project, Résonances presents a multidisciplinary and immersive live performance, merging visual art, improvised music, poetry and dance. She recently joined the team of ‘Women in Jazz Media’ and has collaborated with South Hill Park Arts Centre on a multidisciplinary project ‘Feeling the Beat’. Aurelie explores notions as the invisible, ephemerality and emotion through colours and harmonious compositions of form and light.

ALEX WARD‘s musical activities straddle the worlds of free improvisation, contemporary composition and avant rock, and have seen him work with such figures as Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill, Eugene Chadbourne, Thurston Moore, Evan Parker and David Thomas. His solo guitar performances draw on the full range of his musical language and combine composed and improvised material – his first solo album “Frames” on Relative Pitch Records, 2020, was followed by “The Trade” (on Takuroko, 2021) where the compositions were dovetailed into a continuous whole, reflecting the approach of his live solo guitar performances. His repertoire for this occasion will include material from both albums alongside as-yet-unreleased pieces.
