Michael Janisch’s Paradigm Shift – European Album Launch tour

Janisch hit the international scene running with his 2010 debut Purpose Built that positioned him as one of the premier bassists/bandleaders of his generation. Bass Musician Magazine stated “Janisch is one of the few bass players out there who plays both electric and upright with equal facility, passion and musicality” while Jazz TImes Magazine called it “the complete package”. After an intense touring schedule of the album’s music he released two subsequent co-led projects with Aruan Ortiz (ft Greg Osby) & Lee Konitz to worldwide acclaim.

As a composer and bassist Michael Janisch has been known for his distinct virtuosity and a penchant for thematic material, attention to groove and a reverence for his past musical experiences. On Paradigm Shift Janisch deepens his own vision as an artist by expanding his compositional palette, propelling his music into new sonic terrain conceptually, harmonically, and rhythmically. A series of everyday (but nonetheless life changing) events have informed the music, including the birth of his two daughters and the sudden death of his brother Joseph.

“It’s been much more organic on a composition level to just allow these new experiences to guide the writing process.”

Moreover, Janisch has increasingly became involved at the grass roots level in activism against corporate plutocracy, large-scale globalization, religious fanaticism, global warming & GMO products, as well as ongoing war and state-sponsored aggression. “My first solo album was a presentation of what I had experienced on a musical level up to the point of release. With Paradigm Shift I’ve had so many extra-musical events occur it was life that informed and inspired this new music. It’s been much more organic on a composition level to just allow these new experiences to guide the writing process. I’ve not written music and subsequently grafted some personal, social or political cause on top of it; rather it was the emotions I’ve experienced that guided me to generate the sounds, colors and rhythms that eventually led to the music on the record. It’s all been a much more holistic and fulfilling writing process.”

“Michael Janisch is a commanding bassist, who brings a sinewy thrust to the ensemble with masterful agility.”
Downbeat Magazine“Janisch seizes the instrument with a blend of speed and energy as if he wants to be melody, harmony and rhythm all at once.”
The Telegraph“A bassist everyone with ears seems to want.”
The Buffalo News“Janisch leads his quintet on a rip-roaring ride, doling out heavy grooves, tasty walking lines and melody by the bucketful. Like all good bassists, he knows when to sit back and let the lead instruments have their spot.”
Bass Guitar Magazine“Janisch is one of the few bass players out there who plays both electric and upright with equal facility, passion and musicality.”
Bass Musician MagazineBIOGRPAHICAL INFO:American bassist, composer, producer and record label owner Michael Janisch is one of the preeminent artists of his generation working in jazz and experimental musics.  This September he releases his second solo recording Paradigm Shift and debuts his new sextet of the same name.  Paradigm Shift is a double disc album featuring new original material (including disc one that is solely comprised of the ‘Paradigm Shift Suite’) composed by the leader with some choice originals by his bandmates.  The music was initially recorded live by his acoustic quintet after a two-week European tour and was subsequently taken into the studio for post production augmentation by Janisch and electronics wizard Alex Bonney.  Janisch’s new band Paradigm Shift will include Bonney on the live shows thus pairing the acoustic quintet with real-time electronic manipulation, presenting an engaging sonic program of music that mixes contemporary jazz, electronica, funk, rock, punk and free improv alongside anthemic themes, otherworldly sounds and infectious grooves.

The rest of the band features some of the most sought after, versatile and experienced musicians of their generation in soprano saxophonist Jason Yarde (Sam Rivers, Hermeto Pascoal, Jazz Warriors), tenor saxophonist Paul Booth (Steve Winwood, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton), Grammy-award winning pianist Cédric Hanriot (Dianna Reeves, John Patitucci) and Coln Stranahan (drummer)
