About
From the Shetland Islands, via the ‘City of Edinburgh Music School’ and Birmingham Conservatoire, Rachael Cohen now finds herself amongst the top players on London’s vibrant Jazz scene and one the leading voices of her generation. Head hunted by Bass player Michael Janisch, Rachael became the first female to be signed to his now internationally renowned label ‘Whirlwind Recordings’, releasing her debut ‘Halftime’ in 2013 to critical acclaim. Rachael holds a monthly residency at London’s most famous Jazz Club – Ronnie Scott’s, where she can be found performing with her own quartet, as well as the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. An active composer, Rachael writes for her own ensembles, most notably for her trio with New York drummer Jason Brown (Monty Alexander, Joey Defrancesco), and Quartet with Empirical Vibraphonist Lewis Wright. Recent years have seen Rachael tour with the Blue Note supergroup ‘Artemis’ led by pianist Renee Rosnes, and work with the Japanese pianist Miki Yamanaka. She has been listed twice in the critic’s poll as a rising star in the American magazine ‘Downbeat’.
Here she puts together a band of her favourite musicians who are all exceptional artists in their own right.
