About

Celebrating one of Hard Bop’s greatest composers.

Horace Silver was one of the key figures in defining the sound of hard bop in the 1950s. After leaving the Jazz Messengers he led his own band for four decades as a vehicle for his own compositions, many of which are found on now classic Blue Note recordings.

For this show we will be presenting a selection of his tunes that display the range of his compositional talents, often featuring heavy blues and gospel influences, rhythms unusual in jazz at the time and arresting harmony. As well as giving a nod to some of the tunes that have gone on to be jazz standards in their own right, you’ll also hear some tunes much less commonly heard live, in the small group jazz setting they were written for.

Following on from the band’s previous sell out shows at the Vortex featuring the music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk , we return to present a celebration of another of the all time jazz greats.
