A new monthly series of gigs of best new jazz coming out of London.

This month we’ll be having music and collaborations in various lineups from a great group of London’s finest young musicians. It builds on the exciting scene that we have here. It’s a night with the finger on the pulse of what’s happening. Come and experience today the jazz of tomorrow.

Marta Gornicka (vocals)

Jakub Klimiuk (guitar)

Alex Lockheart (guitar)

Kasper Rietkerk (saxophone)

Rebecka Edlund (vocals)

Each month in future one of these musicians (plus bassist Caius Williams) will be the main curator, with the assistance of the others.

This is the first of the new Whirlpool series, encouraging new music from the newest cohort of London musicians. The series takes its name from the tune (and album) by John Taylor, one of the leading jazz pianists this country has produced. It build on a great legacy.

A bit more background!
Newly jazz musicians may be overwhelmed at how to take their first independent steps as professional musicians. To help with this we at the Vortex are delighted to announce the Whirlpool Series, a monthly series of gigs showcasing the music of those new on to the scene.

These six curators, two recent graduates from each college, will programme the nights. To encourage the creation of new connections, both professional and musical, each gig will involve musicians from across graduates of the three main London colleges*. We have worked together with the colleges to select the curators.

We expect this programme to grow, and in the future we want to also offer mentoring, streaming and more, helping the graduates to market both themselves and their music. The first gig will present the music of the members of the selection panel themselves.
