About

Comprising leading figures from the UK’s improvised music scene, Union Division celebrate the launch of their debut release Micromotives on Discus Music: a daring and anarchic approach to spontaneous music-making from ensemble leader Moss Freed, with improvisation and sociality at its core.

Following on from the work of John Zorn, Sun Ra, Christian Wolff, Anthony Braxton and ICP Orchestra, Micromotives constitutes a group performance practice that enables larger numbers of players to synchronise and coalesce around specific materials whilst maintaining key individual freedoms and modes of information flow more commonly asociated with free improvisation in small groups. The resulting music moves easily between a dizzying array of musical landscapes, each piece constructed in real time by the hive mind of the group.

“One of the most intriguing collective improvisations perhaps ever seen… this novel methodology could just pave the way for something huge” Jazz Journal
