What do musicians take with them when they improvise? Pre-prepared licks and techniques that might be adjusted by who and where one is playing, perhaps. What is the ‘minimum’ required to improvise?
At the recent jazz festival in Bolzano, a number of gigs adapted more classic approaches to music, such as the song cycle and the string quartet (though with guitars, violin and cello). Where should these be placed in the hierarchy of musical styles? Is it just the line-up or is there more?
