This week’s discussion, in the week following International Women’s Day, deals with the issue of women and their involvement in jazz, both as performers and as listeners. The Vortex has been aware of the imbalance for many years, such as through starting in 2002 the all-female Vortex Foundation Big Band which both closed the old Vortex and opened the new; and the Blow The Fuse initiative.
Of course, the problem is never solved. We shall especially glad to be joined by Ragnar Berthling from Sweden, who is part of the Keychange initiative started by PRSF here in UK, and Deirdre Cartwright and Alison Rayner of Blow The Fuse, who have been regularly programming series of gigs at the Vortex for nearly 30 years.
