Vortex discussion 62. Jazz and Politics – which comes first?

Jazz and its musicians has always been renowned for a strong position on freedom, racism, gender equality and similar as a political force. Notable with Max Roach and Nina Simone in the 60s, but also here with the strong positions by musicians to support CND, the miners in the 80s and, most recently, strong positions over racism and the Windrush scandal.
However.
As an art form that has, over the years, become more and more reliant on government support, is that political will being lost and the music form is becoming, rather, a mouthpiece for government policies and more. Are we muted in how we can, for example, fight against the problems that Brexit is throwing up?
This week’s discussion, led by Vortex director Oliver Weindling, follows a couple of weeks break, but marches headlong into this subject.

Oliver Weindling is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
