Music as “soul music” is sometimes dismissed as hackneyed and meaningless. But certainly great music has personality and emotion, often that of the artists performing in jazz. But is there more than that. And if there is a greater depth being sought, what sort and for whom? Just self-indulgence for the musicians or something more for the audience?
