Vortex discussion 89 – Defining jazz today: what’s in a name?

Today’s discussion encourages people to wonder about the definitions of jazz especially being thrown around today.

There have always been discussions about the definition of ‘jazz’. But today, equally there is, while the term is accepted, descriptions of the music which use new terminologies. Adding to the usual terms such as ‘mainstream’, ‘bebop’, ‘free improv’, there are now others, such as ‘new jazz scene’, ‘psychotropic’, ‘environmental’ and more. Are they helpful? Or just marketing hype?

Conversely, a number of groups outside the purer jazz scene are happily embracing the term ‘jazz’ in their own descriptions of themselves.

Today’s discussion, led by Vortex director Oliver Weindling, looks at some of these areas and whether they are just muddying the waters. Open to those with strong views, or who just are curious!
