Number 7 jazz venue in the world – THE VORTEX!

On the website www.allaboutjazz.com, there has been a poll for the best jazz venue in the world. It ends on 15 April.

The Vortex came in at number 7 – in the world. That’s above all other venues in the UK (with Ronnie’s at 9), and above many more prestigious places in New York, such as Blue Note, Jazz Standard and Lincoln Center,  while just 2 votes below iconic Small’s.

Thanks to all that voted for us. But now we have to keep the club up there. So support us in every way that you can.

David Mossman who started the Vortex 30 years ago would have been proud. He was so under-recognised outside the community of musicians and committed music lovers. He never received any of those awards for ‘Services to Jazz’ (though he did receive a letter of thanks from the Parliamentary Jazz Committee just before he died, for what that’s worth). Similarly, the club has done this without regular funding from any of those bodies like the Arts Council. Indeed, the local authority support has been negative, with the present demand for rates from LB Hackney potentially up by a monstrous amount.
