About
“…a leading light among contemporary jazz trumpeters…”- Jazzwise
Composer and trumpet player Adam O’Farrill’s music is as radiant and free-flowing in its melody, as it is geometric and off-kilter in its rhythm. With his longtime quartet, Stranger Days, O’Farrill has released the critically-acclaimed albums Hueso, Stranger Days, El Maquech, and Visions of Your Other, finding inspiration in everyone from Miles Davis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Thom Yorke to Alice Munro, Rene Magritte, and Paul Thomas Anderson. On this most recent album, For These Streets, Adam expanded his sonic landscape to an octet, channeling the art and culture of the 1930s through a contemporary creative viewpoint. Further shaping O’Farrill’s work as a composer and improviser have been his collaborations with a wide range of artists including Hiromi, Mary Halvorson, Vijay Iyer, Anna Webber, Mulatu Astatke, Tyshawn Sorey, Son Lux, Photay, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Samora Pinderhughes.
ELEPHANT is a new quartet that features Yvonne Rogers on piano and synthesizer, Walter Stinson on double bass, Russell Holzman on drums, and O’Farrill on trumpet and electronics. Drawing influence from 20th century classical music and minimalism, as well as the beat music of the subsequent drum machine era, ELEPHANT strikes an impressive balance between the freedom and small-group intimacy of the jazz quartet tradition, the patience and emotional scale of Reich, Sakamoto, and Britten, and the urgency and excitement of contemporary dance music.
