Enzo Zirilli Zirobop

Hailing from Turin Drummer/Percussionist Enzo Zirilli arrived in London in 2004 to become one of the most sought after drummers on the London scene and beyond, working with the likes of Jim Mullen, Stan Sulzmann, John Etheridge, Tom Harrell and Jason Rebello, to name but a few.

In 2014 he formed the band “ZiroBop” with Italian guitar maestro Alessandro Chiappetta and two English rising stars; guitarist Rob Luft, who has toured with Dave Holland’s Youth Big Band, and bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado, who has recently won the Kenny Wheeler prize for composition and arrangement and is now a BBC New Generation Artist. Zirilli is said to have that Paul Motion-like rare skill of allowing the space and subtle energy to do the hard work, playing with an economy that makes every percussive beat and brushstroke count double in its meaning and intensity.

With such a line-up, you might think that it’s an updated gypsy jazz group. Musically, the answer is ‘No Way’, but in terms of energy, enthusiasm and fun, it could well be.

Tonight Enzo and the band will be playing music from their second ZiroBop album “Ten to Late”, with a mix of classic jazz standards, World music and originals by and from all the members of the band. “Enzo and his great band approach a wide range of material with such creativity, taste and soulfullness” Larry Goldings; “4 exceptional musicians! A unique and varied repertoire beautifully rendered by this special group. Fantastic guitar….an amazing foundation of different grooves….Everyone here is playing on the highest leve…shows the maturity and adventurousness of all involved!” Peter Bernstein; “Luft…an extraordinary talent!” BBC Radio 3
