About

Two of the UK’s finest saxophonists together with the world class rhythm section of Dave Whitford and Gene Calderazzo present a high energy quartet playing compositions by some of the creative giants of the saxophone. Expect to hear music by Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Sonny Rollins amongst others.

Steve Buckley first came to prominence in the 1980’s as one of the featured young sax players in the now legendary, and hugely influential band Loose Tubes, establishing a well deserved reputation as a fluent and highly creative improviser with a unique and distinctive voice. Although primarily associated with UK contemporary Jazz he was for a long time a regular player on the London based African and Latin American music scene, something that has been a major influence on his approach to playing. He has worked with such jazz luminaries as Django Bates, John Taylor, Myra Melford, Jim Black,  Steve Noble and Oren Marshall to name but a few. His long time association with trumpeter Chris Batchelor produced bands such as the highly acclaimed, BBC award winning Big Air, and more recently Zone B.

Julian Siegel is an in-demand saxophonist on the UK and European Jazz scene who has worked with many of the top figures in the music. He was awarded the 2007 BBC Jazz Award for Best Instrumentalist. The Julian Siegel Quartet was awarded the 2011 London Jazz Award and has performed internationally. The Quartet was featured on the cover of UK’s Jazzwise Magazine in February 2018 and their album VISTA was included in Jazzwise’s Top 20 Jazz Albums of the year. From 1996 Julian co-led the influential band Partisans with the award-winning NYC based guitarist Phil Robson. The band’s fifth album ‘Swamp’ (Whirlwind) was awarded Best Album in the 2015 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Other projects include The Julian Siegel Trio with US Improvising stars, drummer Joey Baron and bassist Greg Cohen and the Julian Siegel Jazz  Orchestra. In January 2021 during lockdown Julian was invited to play on the new album by Sir John McLaughlin. The album is called ‘Liberation Time’ released in June 2021. Photo copyright: Carl Hyde
