About

Returning to the Vortex Jazz Club on the back of their sold-out show last year, the Jonny Ford Jazz Orchestra is one of the most exciting new large ensembles on the UK jazz scene. Led by saxophonist and composer Jonny Ford, the band brings together the UK’s finest improvising musicians to perform his original compositions, blending intricate layers of orchestral jazz with vibrant energy, exceptional skill, and unwavering passion.

Jonny’s music is deeply inspired by people, places, and stories – each composition carries a relatable and accessible narrative, shaped with the unique artistic voices of his band members in mind.

His writing draws influence from legendary big band composers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones, Jim McNeely, Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler, Nikki Iles, Stan Sulzmann, and Vince Mendoza, alongside broader inspirations from Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Egberto Gismonti, and Olivier Messiaen.

Beyond leading his band, Jonny is an in-demand saxophonist and composer, having worked with artists including Mica Paris, Rebecca Ferguson, Heather Small, Cory Wong, the NDR Big Band, the Gareth Lockrane Big Band, the Matt Carter Octet, and the Tom Smith Big Band.
