About:
orn from the solo explorations of bassist Oli FitzGerald, this project reimagines the traditional band as a singular, self-evolving organism. By treating the entire ensemble as a living loop pedal, the group uses fragmented motifs and organic stimuli to trigger spontaneous shifts in texture and tone as well as laying the foundation that inspires creativity. This music brings together his influence of ambient, malleable soundscape music and groove/improvisation focused bands and artists such as Nerve, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman.
It’s a great chance to hear some of the new names on the London scene being given a platform. The Whirlpool musicians, chosen by the heads of jazz courses at London colleges, curate monthly gigs at the Vortex, working together to create a new and exciting body of music.
Describing the opening concert a couple of years ago, Sebastian Scotney wrote in UK Jazz News: “Their ability to co-operate and dovetail with each other to create something new – particularly considering the four had never met before – and the way they were able to create flow and to tell a story together was nothing short of astonishing.”
