About
This month’s Whirlpool night is curated by bassist Oli Fitzgerald. He presents a night of his own original music involving his colleagues.
Oli is one of the curators who is involved in our latest Whirlpool series, where there are seven recently graduated musicians selected by the heads of jazz courses at Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School, Trinity Laban.
The Whirlpool group changes from year to year. The current members are: Jonah Phillips (drums), Lior Solomons-Wise (piano), Ananda Brandao (drums), Dom Howard (guitar), Barney Anderson (guitar), Olivia Hughes (trombone), Oli Fitzgerald (drums).
It’s a great chance to hear some of the new names on the London scene being given a platform. Already a number have gone on to major tours, such as Kasper Rietkerk who won Dutch Edison for best newcomer (Dutch Grammy equivalent)
Describing the opening concert a couple of years ago, Sebastian Scotney wrote in UK Jazz News: “Their ability to co-operate and dovetail with each other to create something new – particularly considering the four had never met before – and the way they were able to create flow and to tell a story together was nothing short of astonishing.”
