The death of drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo has hit us hard at the Vortex. Originally from South Africa, he came as a member of the Blue Notes to London in 1965 to escape apartheid. His collaborations at the club were always memorable, ranging from his own bands, such as Four Blokes or Viva La Black!, through to duos with the likes of Keith Tippett or the quartet Foxes Fox. Great that he could die back in his home country. But his legacy and influence will endure, through, in particular, musicians such as Alexander Hawkins, Shabaka and Jason Yarde, all of whom worked regularly with him. A fuller appreciation on our web site is here. (https://www.vortexjazz.co.uk/2025/06/14/louis-moholo-moholo-1940-2025/)
The next week has a few of our favourite musicians playing! Be it the return of thrilling pianist Zoe Rahman, able to play on our Steinway (21st) which is so highly regarded, guitarist Nick Costley-White launching his new album including the wonderful Julian Siegel (20th), or Mark Lockheart (27th) in a new trio with Huw V Williams and Jay Davis. Due to the problems related to post Brexit and travel, we have perhaps fewer visitors than before from continental Europe. So our Jazzexchange gig on 23rd, of the Austrian duo of Cozy Friedel and Martin Listaberth (in a double bill with Robert Mitchell and Shirley Smart) will have added poignancy. They come from Vienna where there is a vibrant scene and also a great club, Porgy & Bess, the Vortex equivalent.
And not to forget our Downstairs Living Room late gig next Friday (27th) with Immy Churchill, one of the best new singers around. Without a doubt.
20 Nick Costley-White “Poncha” Album Launch Tour
Costley-White brings a supergroup for the launch of his new album: Julian Siegel (tenor sax), Conor Chaplin (bass), James Maddren (drums). “A lyrical improviser with a crystal-clear sound and his swing feel is beautifully laidback.” (Jazzwise)
21 Zoe Rahman Trio
A truly world-class pianist who is as original in her compositions – touches of Bengali within her strong jazz attitude – as in her gorgeous technique. A MOBO Award winner, Mercury Prize nominee and Ivor Novello Award winner, in addition to her latest release being Album of the Year at the 2024 Parliamentary Jazz Awards
22 Sunday jam session with Harben Kay
Our Sunday jam sessions are possibly the best in London. This week is hosted by award-winning saxophonist Harben Kay, who gives energy and soul to every performance and encourages those playing in the most personable and encouraging manner.

Cozy Friedel and Martin Listabarth, a duo of violin and piano, are invited by The Austrian Cultural Forum in a duo which also includes the energetic imagination of the cello-piano duo of Robert Mitchell and Shirley Smart.

Welcoming and relaxed, come for a drink and listen to the music or bring your instrument to join in the second set.
25 Steven Nicholls Quintet

26 Royal Academy of Music Free Improv Group
Led by Chris Williams (Led Bib) and Moss Freed (Let Spin) we have the chance to hear the outcome of the classes run at the Royal Academy of Music. Come and hear the stars of the future
27 Lockheart/Williams/Davis Trio
A new trio crossing the generations. Influential axophonist Mark Lockheart is justifiably one of the icons of London jazz. Here he collaborates with the diversely-influenced bassist Huw V Williams and sensitive drummer Jay Davis. Always fresh and always energising, with the experience of over 40 years on the London scene.
27 (Downstairs late) The Downstairs Living Room with Immy Churchill
This month, for this intimate but joyous late night, we celebrate the launch of Immy’s new single, and her first as leader. It’ll make the night very special, so be there! Late night travel to and from the Vortex with Overground, underground and bus is easy – no excuses.
28 A Kurdish Music Concert with Suna Alan
An evocative night of depth and beauty with charismatic vocalist Suna Alan and her band. It’ll encourage you to laugh and cry simultaneously. If you come, you’ll be on your feet dancing by the end of the night. Guaranteed.
