Vortex discussion 69 – Brexit’s impact on musicians and culture

The story about Brexit is very mixed. Indeed, British musicians will be easily able to access certain countries for gigs with provisos (over tax, importing and re-exporting instruments and….)

Though a big loss is that the UK is no longer part of Creative Europe, a project of which the Vortex participated in just before Covid hit.

In a letter from DCMS received by Oliver Weindling, the Vortex director who hosts this discussion, they reiterate that they left Creative Europe because they believe that they prefer to develop contacts outside the European Union. And intimates that the Culture Recovery Fund has to an extent also replaced it for now.

However, it is clear that, even if successful, it won’t happen for a while and, in the mean time, many UK musicians will lose a major source of income. But surely there are also elements of collaboration lost with European musicians and also the chance for us to hear musicians from elsewhere in the UK? These too are important aspects of Brexit? But maybe that isn’t a problem!?
