About
Oscar Lyons is a 20-year-old Catholic British Mexican pianist and composer. He has been described by UK Jazz News as “hugely talented”, by jazz pianist Chris Ingham as “a once-in-a-generation talent”, and by Director of the Watford Jazz Junction, Chris Newstead, as “extraordinary… a future star of European jazz”. Lyons is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music and is working with some of the most innovative musicians on the scene. He leads an outstanding quartet, including saxophonist George Johnson (BBC Young Jazz Musician 2024 finalist) drummer Ananda Brandão (credits include Ant Law, Alex Hitchcock, Emma Rawicz) and bassist Zaki Osahn (venues played at include Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Festival Hall, Cadogan Hall).
Lyons has played as part of the London-based concert series Jazz in the Round. He has been featured at Ronnie Scott’s in the show ‘Future Movers’, which showcases some of the UK’s finest young jazz musicians, and he has played twice at the Watford Jazz Junction, supporting Emma Rawicz and Mark Kavuma.
Lyons has already established himself as a composer and improviser and has developed a distinctive voice in this idiom. His influences are diverse; in addition to the jazz tradition, he draws from Latin American styles, English folk music, and hymnal music.
