About
Commemorating the twentieth anniversary of Derek Bailey’s passing, Thurston Moore and Mark Wastell pay homage to Derek’s memory, especially his celebrated guitar/percussion duos with fellow travellers John Stevens, Tony Oxley and Han Bennink.
Thurston first met Derek in NYC in 1993, when he and drummer William Hooker shared the bill with Derek and Tony Oxley. He recalls Derek “being surprised when I asked him about his playing on the Basil Kirchin LP Worlds Within Worlds. I think he was just taken aback that some kid from the USA would even be aware of such a thing”. They played guitars next to each other, a few years later, on a crowded stage at The Tonic in NYC, at an event organised by Loren Mazzacane Connors. Thurston also invited Derek to participate in Root, a recording released in 1998.
Mark met Derek in the early nineties, but first played together at an Incus Records event held at the original Vortex in 1998. The following year, he was invited to participate in Company in Marseille, and again in London (2000) and New York (2001). And in the group IST, Mark supported Derek, John Zorn and Bill Laswell at the Barbican Centre in 2000. Derek also enjoyed performing at Mark’s record shop in London (Sound 323) playing there twice in 2001, in a duo with Simon H. Fell and solo.
