About:
Sacha Harlan (b. 2003, London) is a drummer and composer. His practice is grounded in his continual exposure to music and a broad spectrum of the arts throughout his life, thanks to his parents being musicians and educators themselves. He first took his creative practice into his own hands as a circus performer and was heavily involved in youth programmes at the National Centre for Circus Arts. Soon afterwards, the drums, and more importantly, jazz music, came into the foreground – since his emergence onto the scene he has had the honour of performing with many of the biggest proponents of jazz music in Britain, including Steve Williamson, Julian Joseph, Tom Challenger and Hans Koller. Most prolific is his work with trumpeter and composer Byron Wallen, they first appeared together as part of the EFG Jazz Festival in 2023, paying tribute to Andrew Hill.
Contexture is a continuation of Sacha Harlan’s musical partnership with bassist Kobe Heath-Ngugi, interwoven with the tightly unified pairing of saxophonist George Mooney and trombonist Olivia Hughes. Their embodiment of a heavy group interdependence conjures immediate and radical evolutions within their improvisation, contributing to a naturally fiery, extroverted and highly playful sound.
